When is it necessary to use 得?

I found this phrase in my Chinese textbook: 他做事很慢。一天的事他要做三天。I think it should say 他做事做得很慢, but I'm not sure if I'm wrong, and if I'm wrong, why?

It's not wrong.
Remember that 得 is used behind an verb and before an adverb.

Both expressions are correct. I would say the phrase from your textbook is more oral Chinese, while your expression is also seen in daily talk and is better, regarding to grammar.

In this sentence, we use 得 to focus on the 'slow'.
