由 yóu from in Mandarin Chinese

Definition

This character has been categorized under the radical 田 tián “field.” It was originally a picture of a sprout, which was growing out from and drawing its nourishment “from” 由 a seed. The whole character is a phonetic, e.g., in 油 yóu.

Distinguish 由 from 油, 中 zhōng, and 早 zăo.
