Introduction
Polish culture has a rich history and is known for its unique customs and traditions. It is a culture that values family, religion, and community. Polish holidays and celebrations are an important part of Polish culture, which is why it is essential to learn about them. In this lesson, we will explore some of the most significant holidays and celebrations in Poland.
Christmas
Christmas is one of the most important holidays in Poland. It is celebrated on December 24th, which is known as "Wigilia." On this day, families gather together to share a traditional supper, which consists of twelve dishes, symbolizing the twelve apostles.
One of the most important aspects of the Wigilia supper is the sharing of the Christmas wafer, called "opłatek." The opłatek is a thin, unleavened bread, which is shared among the guests. Each person breaks off a piece of the opłatek and shares it with others, while wishing them good health and prosperity in the coming year.
Easter
Easter is another significant holiday in Poland. It is a religious holiday that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Poland, Easter is celebrated with many traditions and customs.
One of the most important customs is the preparation of the Easter basket, which is filled with traditional foods, such as Easter bread, eggs, and sausage. On Easter Sunday, families bring their baskets to the church to be blessed by the priest.
Another important tradition is the pouring of water on Easter Monday, known as "Śmigus-Dyngus." It is a day when boys pour water on girls and spank them gently with pussy willow branches. It is said that water has healing powers and that this tradition is intended to bring good health and fertility.
National Independence Day
National Independence Day is celebrated on November 11th and is one of the most important public holidays in Poland. It commemorates Poland's independence from foreign rule in 1918. On this day, there are parades and various events, and people decorate their homes and workplaces with the Polish flag.
