As a Kazakh language teacher with over 20 years of experience, I am excited to introduce you to the basics of greeting and introducing yourself in Kazakh. In this lesson, we will cover essential vocabulary and phrases to make a good first impression and connect with locals.

When traveling to a new country, it’s incredibly rewarding to be able to communicate with locals in their own language. Not only does it make the experience more enjoyable, but it also shows respect for the people and culture you are visiting. Mastery of even basic phrases in Kazakh will demonstrate your respect and appreciation.

Basic Greetings

Let’s start with some common phrases you can use to say hello in Kazakh:

Әссәләмҗәнәләр ässälemjänälär Hello (formal)
Сәлем säläm Hello (informal)
Қалайсыңдар? qalaisındar? How are you? (formal)
Қалайсың? qalaisıñ? How are you? (informal)
Рақмет raqmet Thank you
Сәтті болыңыз sätti bolyñız Goodbye (formal)
Сәтті бол sätti bol Goodbye (informal)

It’s important to note that Kazakh has a formal and informal way of addressing people. Use the formal address (Әссәләмҗәнәләр) when speaking to elders or people who hold a higher position than you, and use the informal address (Сәлем) when speaking to close friends or people around your age or younger.

Introducing Yourself

Now that you know how to say hello, it’s time to introduce yourself. Here are some phrases you can use:

Менің атым ___ meniñ atım ___ My name is ___
Кандайсыз? qandaisız? What is your name?
Мен Sizдермен танысқаныма қуаныштымын men sızdérmen tanyşqanıma quanıştımın Nice to meet you (formal)
Мен сұрамын, Сендің атың кім? men süramın, sendiñ atıñ kim? May I ask, what is your name? (informal)

You can use the above phrases to introduce yourself and engage in a brief conversation about names. To take things further, it’s essential to learn how to ask more questions and show interest in the other person.

Asking Questions

Here are some common expressions for asking questions in Kazakh:

Kazakh Pronunciation English
Сіз табысыңыз ба? siz tabysıñız ba? Do you understand?
Сіздің үлкеніңіз кім? sizdiñ ülkeniñiz kim? Where are you from? (formal)
Өзіңіз тұрған жеріңіз қайда? özıñız turgan jeriniz qayda? Where are you from? (informal)
Қанша уақыттың бар? qansha uaqtyttyñ bar? What time is it?

By asking these questions, you can continue the conversation, show interest in the other person, and build rapport.
