Namaste, and welcome to the Hindi Grammar lesson on Adverbs of Manner. In this lesson, you will learn how to describe how actions are performed in Hindi, including words like quickly, slowly, carefully, and more. I have been teaching Hindi for 20 years now, and I'm excited to introduce you to this interesting aspect of the language.

Adverbs of Manner

Adverbs of manner describe how an action is done. They give us more information about the verb and they usually end in ही. For example:

  • मैं धीरे-धीरे चलता हूँ। (I walk slowly.)
  • वह तेज़ी से चलती है। (She walks quickly.)
  • वह कपड़े ध्यान से सुखाती है। (She dries clothes carefully.)

Here are some common Hindi adverbs of manner that you can use in your conversations:

Hindi Pronunciation English
धीरे-धीरे dhīre-dhīre slowly
तेज़ी से tezī se quickly
गंभीरता से gambhīrtā se seriously
सहजता से sahajtā se easily
ध्यान से dhyān se carefully
डर से dar se fearfully
खुशी से khushī se happily
गुस्से से gusse se angrily

It's important to use adverbs of manner in your sentences to convey the exact meaning you want to express. For example, instead of simply saying "मैं बोलता हूँ" (I speak), you can use an adverb of manner to describe how you speak, like "मैं धीरे-धीरे बोलता हूँ" (I speak slowly).

You can also use adverbs of manner to modify adjectives. For example:

  • वह खुशी से गाना गाती है। (She sings happily.)
  • यह हल्दी सफ़ेद रंग से हल्का पीला है। (This turmeric is lightly yellow in color.)

Placement of Adverbs

In Hindi, adverbs of manner usually come after the verb they describe. However, there are a few exceptions where they can come before the verb. Here's a general rule to follow:

  • If the verb has an object, the adverb of manner usually comes after the object, but before any adverbs of frequency. For example:
 * वह किताब धीरे-धीरे पढ़ता है। (He reads the book slowly.)
 * मैं उसके साथ हमेशा खुशी से खाता हूँ। (I always eat with him happily.)

  • If the verb has no object, the adverb of manner usually comes before the verb. For example:
 * वह चुपचाप बैठा है। (He sits silently.)
 * वे धीरे-धीरे चलते हुए अपने घर की तरफ जाते हैं। (They slowly walk towards their home.)

Adverbs of Frequency

Adverbs of frequency describe how often an action is performed. They tell us whether something happens all the time, never, once in a while, or on certain days. These adverbs are particularly useful for making plans, talking about daily routines or hobbies, and expressing habits.

Here are some common Hindi adverbs of frequency:

Hindi Pronunciation English
हमेशा hameshā always
कभी-कभी kabhi-kabhi sometimes
आमतौर पर āmtaur par usually
कभी-कभार kabhi-kabār occasionally
किसी दिन kisī din one day

Adverbs of frequency usually come before the main verb in the sentence. For example:

  • मैं हर दिन सुबह तल जाता हूँ। (I go for a walk every morning.)
  • वह आमतौर पर यहीं रहती है। (She usually stays here.)
  • मैं कभी-कभी उससे मिलता हूँ। (I sometimes meet him.)
