Bashkir Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Bashkir learners! 😊
In this lesson, we are going to learn about the future tense in Bashkir. The future tense is used to describe actions that will happen in the future. We will also use cultural information and interesting facts to illustrate the lesson. Don't forget to practice what you learn by speaking with native speakers and asking them any questions. Let's get started!

Introduction

In Bashkir, the future tense is formed using the auxiliary verb "белән" ("belen"), which means "with/to". To use the future tense, we need to conjugate this auxiliary verb and add the infinitive form of the main verb. For example:

  • Мин бәлән барасым. (Min bälen barasım.) - "I will go."
  • Син бәлән караһығыҙ. (Sin bälen qarağïz.) - "You will see."
  • Ул әхәдә бәлән төшәәр. (Ul ähädä bälen töşäär.) - "He/she/it will rest."

As you can see, the verb "белән" ("belen") is conjugated to agree with the subject of the sentence. The main verb is in its infinitive form and always comes after the auxiliary verb. Let's look at some more examples:

  • Безнең бәлән тәттәлек төрөсең? (Bezneg bälen tättälek töröseñ?) - "Will you cook with us?"
  • Шәйх әйәлән гомерләр. (Şäyh äyälän homerläär.) - "The Sheikh will travel tomorrow."

As you can see, in the first example, we used the phrase "безнең бәлән" ("bezneg bälen") to mean "with us". In the second example, we used the verb "гомерләр" ("homerläär") to mean "travel", in its infinitive form.

Conjugation of the auxiliary verb "белән"

The auxiliary verb "белән" ("belen") is conjugated as follows:

Person Conjugation Example
Мин беләнем Мин бәләнем. (Min bälenem.) - "I will..."
Син беләнең Син бәләнең. (Sin bäleneñ.) - "You will..."
Ул беләнәк Ул бәләнәк. (Ul bälenäk.) - "He/she/it will..."
Безнең беләнегез Безнең бәләнегез. (Bezneg bälenegez.) - "We will..."
Сез беләнегез Сез бәләнегез. (Sez bälenegez.) - "You will... (formal)"
Улар беләнәрләр Улар бәләнәрләр. (Ular bälenärler.) - "They will..."

Note that the conjugation of the auxiliary verb "белән" ("belen") follows the same pattern as other Bashkir verbs, with slight spelling changes to reflect the vowel harmony.

Examples in Context

Let's see some examples of the future tense being used in context:

Scenario: You are planning a trip with your friend.

  • Person 1: Уйланым этеге йөрәм. (Uylanım etege yörem.) - "I will go to Ufa."
  • Person 2: Мин дә киләмән. (Min dä kilämän.) - "I will go with you."
  • Person 1: Зур йортһа бермәк итсенҙ? (Zur yörtä bermäk itsenð?) - "Will you buy snacks?"
  • Person 2: Әйә, мин бәлән берәм. (Äyä, min bälen beräm.) - "Yes, I will buy with you."
  • Person 1: Бәйләр халде көнәләйәкләр каралар. (Bäylär halde könäläyäklär karalar.) - "We will see the sights tomorrow."
  • Person 2: Аһуалар зур һориҙ достарҙың? (Ağualar zur horið dostarðıñ?) - "Are you meeting your friends at the park?"
  • Person 1: Әйә, улармен бәлән тағынғанда булышаҡ. (Äyä, ularmen bälen tağınğanda bulışaq.) - "Yes, I will meet with them when we have finished walking."

Exceptions

In Bashkir, there are a few exceptions to the rule of using the auxiliary verb "белән" ("belen") to form the future tense. Some verbs have an irregular future tense form, and do not use the auxiliary verb. Here are a few examples:

  • булып - "to be able to"
    • Мин булып киләм. (Min bülüp kiläm.) - "I will be able to come."
  • йәзәреп - "to have to"
    • Шәхсендә йәзәреп киләм. (Şähsendä yäzäräp kiläm.) - "I will have to come."

Summary

In this lesson, we learned about the future tense in Bashkir. We saw that the future tense is formed using the auxiliary verb "белән" ("belen"), which is conjugated to agree with the subject of the sentence, followed by the infinitive form of the main verb.
