Language/Bulgarian/Grammar/Negation
Hi Bulgarian learners! π
In this lesson, we will focus on negations in Bulgarian grammar. Negation is a very important element of any language and Bulgarian is no exception.
Negation refers to the process of expressing the opposite of a statement or a question. In Bulgarian, negation is expressed using different types of negation particles. Let's see how this works.

Negation particles[edit | edit source]
In Bulgarian, there are three main particles to express negation: "Π½Π΅", "Π½ΡΠΌΠ°" and "Π½ΠΈΠΊΠΎΠΉ". Each of them is used in different context and situations.
"ΠΠ΅"[edit | edit source]
"ΠΠ΅" is the most common negative particle in Bulgarian. It is used to negate verbs, adjectives, nouns and phrases. It is usually placed before the word it modifies.
Negating verbs[edit | edit source]
When negating verbs, "Π½Π΅" is placed before the verb. For example:
Bulgarian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Π½Π΅ Π³ΠΎΠ²ΠΎΡΡ | ne govorya | I am not speaking |
Π½Π΅ ΡΠΌ | ne yam | I am not eating |
Negating adjectives[edit | edit source]
When negating adjectives, "Π½Π΅" is placed before the adjective.
For example:
Bulgarian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Π½Π΅ ΡΠΌΠ΅Π½ | ne umen | not smart |
Π½Π΅ ΠΊΡΠ°ΡΠΈΠ²Π° | ne krasiva | not beautiful |
"ΠΡΠΌΠ°"[edit | edit source]
"ΠΡΠΌΠ°" means "there isn't" or "there aren't" and is used to express negation in relation to the existence or possession of something. It is used in combination with the postpositive particle "Π»ΠΈ".
For example:
Bulgarian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ΠΡΠΌΠ° Π»ΠΈ Π²ΠΎΠ΄Π°? | Nyama li voda? | Isn't there any water? |
"ΠΠΈΠΊΠΎΠΉ"[edit | edit source]
"ΠΠΈΠΊΠΎΠΉ" means "nobody" or "none", and it is used to express negation in relation to people or things. It is usually placed before the noun it modifies.
For example:
Bulgarian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ΠΠΈΠΊΠΎΠΉ Π½Π΅ Π΅ Ρ Π΄ΠΎΠΌΠ° | Nikoy ne e u doma | Nobody is at home |
Double negation[edit | edit source]
Bulgarian is a language that allows double negation in certain situations. Double negation reinforces the negative meaning of a sentence.
For example:
Bulgarian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ΠΠ΅ ΠΌΠΎΠ³Π° Π΄Π° Π½Π΅ ΡΠ΅ ΠΎΠ±ΠΈΡΠ°ΠΌ | Ne moga da ne te obicham | I cannot help but love you. |
Π’ΠΎΠΉ Π½ΠΈΠΊΠΎΠ³Π° Π½Π΅ ΠΊΠ°Π·Π²Π° Π½ΠΈΡΠΎ | Toy nikoga ne kazva nishto | He never says anything. |
Negating questions[edit | edit source]
In Bulgarian, negating questions is different from English. Instead of adding "not" at the end of a sentence, we use a negative particle at the beginning of the sentence, followed by the verb and then the subject.
For example:
Bulgarian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ΠΠ΅ Ρ Π°ΡΠ΅ΡΠ²Π°Ρ Π»ΠΈ ΠΊΠ°ΡΠ΅ΡΠΎ? | Ne haresvash li kafeto? | Don't you like the coffee? |
A dialogue[edit | edit source]
- Person 1: ΠΠΈΡ Π»ΠΈ Π±ΠΈΡΠ°? (Am I drinking beer?)
- Person 2: ΠΠ΅, Π½Π΅ ΠΏΠΈΠ΅Ρ Π±ΠΈΡΠ°. (No, you are not drinking beer.)
- Person 1: ΠΠΌΠ° Π»ΠΈ ΠΊΡΡΠ΅ Π² ΠΊΡΡΠ°ΡΠ°? (Is there a dog in the house?)
- Person 2: ΠΠ΅, Π½ΡΠΌΠ° ΠΊΡΡΠ΅ Π² ΠΊΡΡΠ°ΡΠ°. (No, there isn't a dog in the house.)
