To create a comparative and superlative degree of adjectives and adverbs in the Bulgarian language, are used the particles "по /po/ and "най" /nay/.

These particles are placed in front of the adjective or the and adverbs and separated from it by a dash. This applies to all adjectives and adverbs, no matter how long they are. Adjective and adverbs in the comparative and superlative is not changed in any way.

There are no exceptions to this rule in Bulgarian.

In addition to the formation of a comparative degree, the particle "по (po)" is also a preposition in the Bulgarian language. When used as a preposition, it is written as a single word and no dash is written after it.

Example[edit | edit source]

по пътя надолу (po patya nadolu) - on the way down

The particle "най (nay)" is only used to form the superlative.

For comparisons between two objects in a positive sense , we can also use the construction: толкова + прилагателно име, колкото (tolkova + prilagatelno ime, kolkoto) - as + adjective+ as

  • Мария е толкова висока, колкото Габриела.(Mariya e tolkova visoka, kolkoto Gabriela.) - Maria is as tall as Gabriela.
  • Джон е толкова богат, колкото Стивън (Dzhon e tolkova bogat, kolkoto Stivan) - John is as rich as Steven.

Before "колкото (kolkoto)" in Bulgarian language there is always a comma.

For comparisons between two objects in a negative sense , we can also use the construction: не e толкова + прилагателно име, колкото ( ne e tolkova + prilagatelno ime, kolkoto) - not as + adjective+ as

  • Мария не е толкова висока, колкото Габриела.(Mariya ne e tolkova visoka, kolkoto Gabriela.) - Maria is not as tall as Gabriela.
  • Джон не е толкова богат, колкото Стивън (Dzhon ne e tolkova bogat, kolkoto Stivan) - John is not as rich as Steven.
