As a Panjabi language teacher with over 20 years of experience, I understand the importance of learning travel vocabulary for students who want to have conversations with locals or travel to Panjab. In this lesson, you will learn how to ask and give directions, and vocabulary related to places in Panjabi.

Asking for Directions

When you are lost in a new place, asking for directions can be challenging. Here are some useful phrases that you can use:

  • “ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਹੈ?” (Sri Harmandir Sahib kithay hai?) - Where is the Golden Temple?
  • “ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਡੀ ਪਾਰਕਿੰਗ ਲਾਈ ਖੋਜ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ” (Meri gaḍḍī pārking lāī khoj rahī hai) - I am looking for parking for my car.
  • “ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਖਾਣਾ ਜਬਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ?” (Vāste koi khāṇā jabān vic hai?) - Is there any restaurant nearby?

When you ask for directions, people may answer in different ways, and it's essential to know the vocabulary used to understand what they're saying. Some common words and phrases include:

Panjabi Pronunciation English
ਉੱਤੇ Uttē Up
ਹੇਠੇ Hēthē Down
ਸੱਜੇ ਖਿੱਤਾਬ ਉੱਤੇ Sajjē khitab utte Straight ahead
ਗੱਲੀ Gallī Street
ਮੇਲੇ ਖਿੱਤਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ Mēlē khitab vic On the left
ਸੱਜੇ ਖਿੱਤਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ Sajjē khitab vic On the right
ਇਥੇ ਮੁੜ Itḥē muṛ Turn here
ਉਥੇ ਮੁੜ Uthē muṛ Turn there

When someone gives you directions, you can say "ਧੰਨਵਾਦ" (Dhannvād), which means "Thank you."

  • “ਹੌਸਲੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਕੋਈ ਖਾਣਾ ਹੈ?” (Hauslē nēṛē koi khāṇā hai?) - Is there any restaurant near the hospital?
