In Panjabi, the days of the week are named after the planets of the solar system. Each day is associated with a different planet and significant in terms of traditional and cultural beliefs.

It's important to note that Panjabi is a tonal language, which means that the pitch in which you say a word carries meaning. So, pay attention to the tonal variations while pronouncing these words.

  • Person 2: ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਸਪਤਾਹ ਛੁੱਟੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਚੱਲਾ ਜਾਣਗਾ। (nahī̃, maĩ is saptāh chuṭī lai ke chaḷā jāṇgā.) (No, I'm taking leave this week.)
  • Dialogue 2:
  • Person 1: ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਕਰਨਗੇ? (kī tusī̃ budhvār nū̃ mīṭiŋg karnge?) (Will you schedule the meeting on Wednesday?)
  • Person 2: ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਬਹਿਤ ਓਕਾਤੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਾਂ (nahī̃, maĩ us din bahit ōkāte bāhar hoṇ vālā hã) (No, I'll be out most of the day.)

Cultural Tidbits[edit | edit source]

- The Sun (ਸੂਰਜ - sūraj) and the Moon (ਚੰਦ - chaṇd) are considered the King and Queen of the planets, respectively. Hence, Sunday and Monday are named after them.

- Tuesday (ਮੰਗਲਵਾਰ - maŋgalvār) is named after the planet Mars (ਮੰਗਲ - maŋgal), also known as the God of War in Hinduism.

- Wednesday (ਬੁੱਧਵਾਰ - budhvār) is named after the planet Mercury (ਬੁੱਧ - budh), also known as the God of Wisdom.

- Thursday (ਵੀਰਵਾਰ - vīrvār) is named after the planet Jupiter (ਬ੍ਰਹਸਪਤਿ - brahaspati), considered the Teacher of the gods in Hinduism.

- Friday (ਸ਼ੁੱਕਰਵਾਰ - śukkrvār) is named after the planet Venus (ਸ਼ੁੱਕਰ - śukkar), also known as the God of Love.

- Saturday (ਸ਼ਨਿੱਚਰਵਾਰ - shanichrvār) is named after the planet Saturn (ਸ਼ਨਿਚਰ - śanichar), also known as the God of Justice.
