TajikGrammar0 to A1 Course → Negation in Sentences

Negation in Tajik can be expressed using the word "не" (ne). In this lesson, you will learn how to negate sentences in Tajik and practice forming negative sentences.

Take a moment to explore these relevant pages as you conclude this lesson: Adjectives & Plurals.

Negating Sentences with "не"

In Tajik, the word "не" (ne) is used to negate sentences. It is placed before the word that is being negated. For example:

  • Ман дарсхону не мехонам. (Man darskhonu ne mekhonam.) - I am not eating breakfast.

In this sentence, "не" negates the verb "mekhonam" which means "I am eating". Without "не", the sentence would mean "I am eating breakfast".

Here are a few more examples:

Tajik Pronunciation English
Ман китоб не мекунам. Man kitob ne mekunam. I am not reading a book.
Ти рӯзаҳои шанбе не баҳорӣ сафар мекунӣ. Ti ruzaҳoi shanbe ne bahorӣ safar mekuni. You don't travel in spring on Saturdays.
У ончоҳ дӯст не дорад. U onchoh dust ne dorad. He/she does not have many friends.

In some cases, "не" is placed after the word being negated. For example:

  • Ман би-неҳондантавон намекунам. (Man bi-nehondan tavon namhekunam.) - I cannot speak English.

In this sentence, "не" is used to negate the verb "mekunam" which means "I am speaking". However, it is placed after the word "tavon" which means "English".

Using "не" in Questions

In Tajik, questions can also be negated by using "не". For example:

  • Ту пӯшиш мекунӣ?! - Бе, ман не пӯшиш мекунам. (Tu pushish mekuni?! - Be, man ne pushish mekunam.) - Are you sleeping?! - No, I am not sleeping.

In this example, "не" is used to negate the verb "mekunam" which means "I am sleeping".

Here are a few more examples:

Tajik Pronunciation English
Оё ту дар ошхона бошӯ?! - Не, ман дар ошхона небошӯм. Oyo tu dar oshkhona boshu?! - Ne, man dar oshkhona ne-boshum. Are you in the kitchen?! - No, I am not in the kitchen.
Ту ширини мева хӯрок мекунӣ?! - Не, ман ширини мева хӯрок не мекунам. Tu shirini meva khurok mekuni?! - Ne, man shirini meva khurok ne mekunam. Are you eating sweet fruit food?! - No, I am not eating sweet fruit food.
Шумо фарҳанги тоҷикӣ гӯшиносед? - Не, ман фарҳанги тоҷикӣ не гӯшонам. Shumo farhangi tojikii gushinosed? - No, man farhangi tojikii ne gushonam. Do you speak Tajik language? - No, I do not speak Tajik language.

"Не" can also be used with question words such as "чӣ" (chi) and "кӯҳ" (kuh). For example:

  • Ту чӣ кӯшиш мекунӣ?! - Ман чӣ кӯшиш не мекунам. (Tu chi kushi mekuni?! - Man chi kushi ne mekunam.) - What are you doing?! - I am not doing anything.

In this example, "не" is used to negate the phrase "mekunam" which means "I am doing". However, it is placed after the word "chi" which means "what".
