As a Korean language teacher for over 20 years, I believe that Korean cuisine is one of the most unique and delicious cuisines in the world. In this lesson, you will learn Korean vocabulary related to cooking and recipes, and you will be able to follow some typical Korean recipes and cook some Korean dishes.

Korean Ingredients

Korean dishes are known for their unique flavors and are often made using Korean ingredients. Here are some of the most common Korean ingredients:

Korean Cooking Methods

Korean cuisine has a variety of cooking methods that make the dishes distinct and unique. Here are some of the most common Korean cooking methods:

  • 불닭 - buldak: This method involves grilling or roasting marinated meat over an open flame.
  • 볶음 - bokkeum: This method involves stir-frying ingredients in a frying pan or wok.
  • 찌개 - jjigae: This method involves making a stew by boiling ingredients in a pot with seasonings and spices.
  • 김치 - kimchi: This method involves fermenting cabbage with seasonings such as chili powder, garlic, and ginger.

Korean Recipes

Now, let's learn some recipes you can easily try at home!

Kimchi Fried Rice (김치볶음밥)

This is a classic Korean dish that is easy to make at home. All you need is some leftover rice, kimchi, and a few other ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 1 cup chopped kimchi
  • 1/4 cup chopped bacon
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon gochujang (chili paste)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

Instructions:

Add the gochujang and soy sauce to the pan and stir-fry for an additional 2-3 minutes. 7. Serve hot.

Korean Style Fried Chicken (양념치킨)

Korean style fried chicken is crunchy, spicy, and delicious. This recipe is easy to make and can be served as a snack or a main course.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound chicken wings
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup gochujang (chili paste)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • Oil for frying

Instructions:

1. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the cornstarch, flour, and water to make a batter. 2. Dip each chicken wing in the batter and set aside. 3. Heat your cooking oil in a deep fryer or frying pan until it reaches 350°F. 4. Add the chicken wings to the oil and fry for 10-15 minutes or until they are crispy and golden brown. 5. Meanwhile, in a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, gochujang, honey, garlic, and sesame oil to make the sauce. 6. Once the chicken wings are done, drain them on a paper towel and then toss them in the sauce. 7. Serve hot.
