Hanji - Korean Traditional Paper[edit | edit source]

Hanji, a traditional handmade paper, has been made in Korea for more than a thousand years. Hanji has a unique tactile feeling and is known to have qualities of softness, strength, and durability. Hanji was traditionally used for many purposes, such as clothing, wallpaper, and the covers of books.

Making Hanji is a complicated process that involves pounding the bark of mulberry trees into a pulp, then filtering and drying it. The resulting paper is highly malleable, which makes it ideal for use in various crafts. Hanji is the main material used to make traditional Korean crafts such as Bojagi (wrapping cloths), Dokkaebi (goblins), and Hanji dolls.

Here are some basic Korean paper crafts that you can make using Hanji.

Hanji Fan[edit | edit source]

For this project, you will need:

  • Hanji, 12-inch square or any size you prefer
  • Popsicle stick
  • Glue

Here's how to make it:

1. Fold the Hanji diagonally, then unfold it to create a crease. 2. Fold the Hanji in half vertically, then unfold it to create another crease. 3. Turn the Hanji over and fold it in half horizontally, then unfold it again to create a third crease. 4. Cut along the third crease line until you reach the halfway point. 5. Fold each section to make a fan shape. 6. Glue the Popsicle stick to the back and let it dry.

Hanji Lantern[edit | edit source]

For this project, you will need:

  • Hanji, 12-inch square or any size you prefer
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Tea light candle

Here's how to make it:

1. Fold the Hanji in half horizontally, then cut it along the crease. 2. Cut strips along the folded edge, leaving about an inch uncut at the other end. 3. Gently unfold the paper and glue the ends together to create a cylinder. 4. Cut a small square out of the Hanji for the base. 5. Glue the base to the bottom of the cylinder. 6. Cut strips of Hanji to create a handle and glue it to the sides. 7. Place a tea light candle inside the paper cylinder and light it up.

Origami[edit | edit source]

Origami is a Japanese paper folding art that has been popular in Korea for hundreds of years. Origami paper is thin and lightweight, coming in various colors and prints. Origami is often used to create decorations and toys like cranes, flowers, and animals.

Here are some easy Origami instructions to try:

Origami Crane[edit | edit source]

For this project, you will need:

  • Square Origami paper
  • Scissors (optional)

Here's how to make it:

1. Fold the paper diagonally, unfold it, and then fold it diagonally in the opposite direction. 2. Unfold the paper and fold it in half horizontally and vertically. 3. You should have four creases with an open square shape in the center; fold the corners of the base to the center. 4. Fold the top layer of each corner to the center crease. 5. You should now have a diamond shape with two flaps on the bottom; fold the bottom left and right sides to the crease in the center. 6. Flip the paper over and repeat step five. 7. Fold the top flap down along the top of the diamond shape. 8. Turn the paper over and repeat step seven for the other flap. 9. Carefully pull on the tail to create the crane's neck and head. And you're done!

Origami Flower[edit | edit source]

For this project, you will need:

  • Square Origami paper

Here's how to make it:

1. Fold the paper diagonally and unfold it. Repeat with the other corner to create an X-shaped crease. 2. Flip the paper over so that the creases are visible; fold each corner of the paper toward the center. 3. Flip the paper over again and then take the top layer of each corner and fold them out to create a diamond shape. 4. Take the top layer of the paper and fold it up. 5. Take the sides of the paper, and use the creases to fold them up into a cone shape. 6. Flatten the cone shape and voila! You have an origami flower.

So now you know the basics of Korean paper crafts. Try making these simple crafts at home and see how fun it is!
