Education in Korea[edit | edit source]

Education is highly valued in Korean culture. The traditional education system emphasizes hard work, discipline and memorization. Even today, students feel immense pressure from parents and society to do well academically.

It is no surprise then, that Korea has one of the highest literacy rates in the world. Education is essentially free in Korea, from elementary school up to high school. University tuition fees can be expensive however, and entrance into a prestigious university is a highly competitive and cutthroat process.

Education in Korean Culture[edit | edit source]

In Korean culture, education is often seen as a path to success and status. Those who excel academically are highly respected, and teaching is a very honorable profession.

In fact, teachers in Korea are often referred to as "nation builders" (ꡭ민의 λŒ€ν‘œμ‚¬μ—…κ°€). Korean parents are also known to be heavily involved in their children's education, attending PTA meetings and hiring tutors to help their children excel in their studies.

As a result, Korean students often have a heavy workload and spend long hours studying. It's not uncommon to see students studying late into the night or attending after-school academies (학원).
