Pronouns[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]

Arabic personal pronouns are used to refer to people, entities, or objects. In this lesson, you will learn the different subject and object pronouns.

There are two types of personal pronouns in Arabic: the independent pronouns and the suffix pronouns. The independent pronouns are used as a separate word, whereas the suffix pronouns are attached to the end of a verb.

Subject pronouns[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]

Subject pronouns are used as the subject of a sentence. They replace the name of the person or entity that is performing the action. Here are the subject pronouns in Arabic:

Standard Arabic Pronunciation English
أَنَا ʾanā I (singular)
أَنْتَ ʾanta You (masculine singular)
أَنْتِ ʾanti You (feminine singular)
هُوَ huwa He
هِيَ hiya She
نَحْنُ naḥnu We (inclusive)
أَنْتُمْ ʾantum You (masculine plural)
أَنْتُنَّ ʾantunna You (feminine plural)
هُمْ hum They (masculine)
هُنَّ hunna They (feminine)

Object pronouns[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]

Object pronouns are used as the object of a sentence. They replace the name of the person or entity that is receiving the action. Here are the object pronouns in Arabic:

Standard Arabic Pronunciation English
يَ -hu (masculine) or -ha (feminine) him, her
نَا -na us
كُمْ -kum you (plural)
هُمْ -hum them (masculine)
هُنَّ -hunna them (feminine)

Note that the suffix pronouns are attached to the end of a verb, but they are not written separately from the verb. For example:

"أَنَا أُحِبُّكَ" (ʾanā ʾuḥibbuka) means "I love you" (where "كَ" (ka) represents "you" in the masculine singular form)

Possessive pronouns[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]

Possessive pronouns are used to show ownership or possession. They can be attached to the end of a noun or used as a separate word, depending on the context. Here are the possessive pronouns in Arabic:

Standard Arabic Pronunciation English
my
-ka your (masculine singular)
-كِ -ki your (feminine singular)
-هُ -hu his
-هَا -hā her
-نَا -nā our
-كُمْ -kum your (plural)
-هُمْ -hum their (masculine)
-هُنَّ -hunna their (feminine)
