The Spelling of Verbs (-λλ or -λ) in Modern Greek

In today's lesson, we will be discussing one of the most common questions that Greek learners have: the spelling of verbs with "-λλ" or "-λ". Verbs in Greek can be a bit tricky to spell, but with a little bit of practice and understanding of the rules, you'll be able to get it right in no time.

The Rules

In Modern Greek, there are certain rules that determine whether a verb should be spelled with "-λλ" or "-λ". These rules are based on the pronunciation of the verb, and are as follows:

Are written with two -λλ ,the verbs in the continuous tenses : παρατατικός, ενεστώτας, εξακολουθητικός μέλλοντας (past tense, present tense, future continuous tense)

are written with two -λλ

While in the instant tenses: παρακείμενος, υπερσυντέλικος, συντελεσμένος μέλλοντας (infinite, instant future), but also in the active tenses

(adjacent, superlative, future active tense) are written with a -λ

• When what the verb says happens always, continuously, usually, then the verb is written with two -λλ

When this is done once, without continuation, then the verb is written with a -λ

• in conclusion : including and all the compound verbs that contain it "βάλλω: I put" it as second synthetic
