Kirghiz Vocabulary - Drinks

Hi Kirghiz learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about different types of drinks in Kyrgyz. Knowing these words will be useful when ordering drinks at a restaurant, grocery shopping or simply having conversations with native speakers. Don't forget to check out the natives speakers on the Polyglot Club and ask them any questions.

Beverages[edit | edit source]

When it comes to beverages, the Kyrgyz people love their tea, just like in other parts of Central Asia. Tea is considered to be the national beverage, and it is usually consumed with either sugar, salt, or milk. Traditionally, it is served in a bowl-shaped cup called a "piala", or in a teapot called a "samovar".

Kyrgyz Pronunciation English
чай çay tea
сүт-чай süt-çay tea with milk
кумыс qımız fermented mare's milk
шорпо şorpo traditional soup broth

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Men bir çını çay içqim qele catat (I want to drink a cup of tea)
  • Person 2: 1) Sen süt-çay içesinbi? 2)Sen süt-çay içqin qele catabı? (Do you want tea with milk?(an offer)

Alcoholic beverages[edit | edit source]

Alcohol is also consumed by some Kirghiz people, although the majority of the population is Muslim and does not drink. A popular drink in Kyrgyzstan is "kumys", which is made from fermented mare's milk. Another common alcoholic drink is beer, which is often consumed during social gatherings or sporting events.

Kirghiz Pronunciation English
водка vodka vodka
пиво pivo beer
кызыл вино kızıl vino red wine

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Qanday, dosum (doske)! Içqenge birdeme barbı? (Cheers, buddy! Do you have something to drink? (implying something “alcoholic”)
  • Person 2: Coq, men içpey qalğam. (No, I have given up drinking(an alcohol).)

Soft drinks[edit | edit source]

Soft drinks are also popular in Kyrgyzstan, particularly among younger generations. There are many brands of soda available, both locally produced and imported. However, some Kirghiz people prefer traditional and non-industrialized drinks like "jarma", which is made from crushed wheat, and "balapan", which is a kind of fermented sour cream.

Kirghiz Pronunciation English
кола kola cola
фанта fantа fanta
лимонад limonad lemonade
суу suu water

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Жармадан суу даярдым. Ширкөк аламан. (I made jarma. I can't find soda.)
  • Person 2: Салып чык, суу болду жана. (Nevermind, water works too.)
