Persian poetry has a long and illustrious history, dating back to the 10th century. It is one of the most important aspects of Persian culture and has influenced many cultures around the world. Persian poetry is known for its beauty, elegance, and intricate metaphors.
Some of the most celebrated poets in Persian literature include:
- Hafez: Hafez is considered one of the greatest Persian poets of all time. His works are known for their beauty, depth, and spiritual themes.
- Rumi: Rumi is another famous Persian poet whose works have been translated into many languages. His poems are known for their spiritual and mystical themes.
- Ferdowsi: Ferdowsi is known for his epic poem, Shahnameh, which tells the story of the kings of Persia from the beginning of time to the Arab conquest.
- Saadi: Saadi is another famous Persian poet whose works include the Bustan and the Gulistan, which are collections of stories and poems.
Persian poetry is written in couplets, known as "shers", which are usually composed of two lines. Each line has a specific number of syllables, and the two lines must rhyme. In Persian poetry, the rhyme is usually placed at the end of the second line.

In addition to poetry, Persian literature also includes a rich tradition of classical literature. Some of the most famous works of Persian classical literature include:
- Shahnameh: As mentioned earlier, Shahnameh is an epic poem written by Ferdowsi. It tells the story of the kings of Persia from the beginning of time to the Arab conquest.
- Masnavi: Masnavi is a collection of poems written by Rumi. It is known for its spiritual themes and its use of allegory.
- Divan-e-Hafez: Divan-e-Hafez is a collection of poems written by Hafez. It is considered one of the most important works of Persian literature.
- Conference of the Birds: Conference of the Birds is a poem written by Attar. It is known for its spiritual themes and its use of allegory.
