Historical origins

• The modern national language results from a systematization and standardization ”from above”, to create a unitary identity of the new nation-state system, also with the introduction of the modern school system in 1870.

• Before this date, spoken Japanese and written Japanese were really different from each other.

• It seems that, until the VI-VII centuries, the inhabitants of the archipelago hadn’t felt the necessity to develop their own system of writing.

• Indeed, they remained in close contact with the Chinese language since the V century, mainly due to the geographic and cultural Corean intermediation.

• Notwithstanding, in Japan, is possible to find artifacts with Chinese characters dating to the I century, and it is believed that the first handwritings of the inhabitants of the Japanese archipelago were inscriptions on stone or metal (blade of sward, for example), based on the syntax of the Chinese language.
