  • Essay on different promotion systems

    • The issue of what criteria promotions in organizations should be based on is certainly a most problematic one.
    • Some argue that seniority is more important than performance, others consider that it is the other way around and that those who perform best should benefit most.
  • This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each one of this positions.
  • One can mention that promotions based on seniority discourages young employees of a company to dedicate themselves to their work because no matter how well they perform, the priority will always be given to the most senior members of the company when it comes to promotions.
  • On the other hand, employees who have spent all their life working in the same company certainly have a profound knowledge of it which should be recognized and rewarded.
  • A company that chooses to give promotions to those who are most performative, does not necessarily encourage employees to be allegeant to that enterprise.
  • By rewarding allegeance to the enterprise, the company can make sure that there is great number of its workers who will not quit their job in order to be promoted.
  • Nevertheless, if the only criteria which decides on whether one gets promoted or not is seniority, young employees who are highly competent and who could help the company progress might find themselves working as subordinates of incompetent co-workers whose only achievement is their allegeance to the enterprise.
    • In ths kind of constellation, the younger employees can not fully contribute to the development of the company because they lack the span of responsibility to do so.
    • I think that which system to choose depends on the activity that a company carries out.
  • In certain sectors creativity is more important than experience and in such a case productivity rather than seniority should be rewarded.
    • An exemple for this kind of sector would be a company that develops smartphone applications and that has to keep up with its concurrence.
  • Nontheless, there are some activities that require a high degree of experience and knowledge of the company or the institution one works in.
  • A case where this principle can be applied is the public service.
    • When working in public administration an in-depth understanding of the structure and the various institutions of the State ist certainly more valuable than creativity.
  • I would personally prefer to work in a company where promotions are based on productivity, because I am a rather creative person, however, I think that different kinds of activity require different criteria on which to base promotions.
