History

Spain has a long and fascinating history that has left its mark on the country's culture to this day. Here are some interesting historical facts:

Spain was once ruled by the Roman Empire, which left behind many impressive architectural and engineering feats, such as the aqueducts in Segovia and the amphitheater in Mérida.

During medieval times, Spain was known for its 'Reconquista' - a period of history when Christian kingdoms fought to take back the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors, who had ruled it for centuries.

In 1492, Spain's Catholic monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand sponsored Christopher Columbus's voyage to find a new trade route to Asia. Instead, he discovered the New World, forever changing the course of history.

Spain's 'Golden Age' (siglo de oro) took place during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, during which time Spain became a global superpower in art and literature.

Landmarks and Traditions

Spain is home to many famous landmarks and traditions that reflect its rich history and culture. Here are just a few:

Landmarks

The Alhambra: Located in Granada, the Alhambra is a stunning palace and fortress complex built during the 13th and 14th centuries by the Moors.

Park Güell: Designed by the famous Spanish artist, Antoni Gaudí, Park Güell is a whimsical public park located in Barcelona that features bright colors, mosaics, and unique architectural designs.

La Sagrada Familia: Also located in Barcelona, La Sagrada Familia is a breathtakingly beautiful basilica that has been under construction since 1882 and is still not complete.

The Royal Palace of Madrid: The largest palace in Europe, the Royal Palace of Madrid is home to the Spanish royal family and features over 3,000 rooms.

Traditions

Bullfighting: While controversial, bullfighting is an important part of Spanish culture and has been a popular pastime for centuries.

Flamenco: Flamenco is a form of traditional Spanish music and dance that originated in the southern region of Andalusia.

La Tomatina: Each year in the town of Buñol, Spaniards celebrate La Tomatina, a festival where participants throw tomatoes at each other in the streets.

Semana Santa: Translating to "Holy Week," Semana Santa is a religious holiday celebrated throughout Spain, featuring elaborate processions and traditions.
