Separable Verbs[edit | edit source]

In German, separable verbs are a type of verb that consists of two parts: a prefix and a base verb. The prefix can be separated from the base verb and moved to the end of the sentence, depending on the sentence structure.

For example, consider the separable verb "anfangen" which means "to begin". In its infinitive form, the verb is "anfangen". However, in a sentence, the prefix "an" can be separated and moved to the end of the sentence, like this:

Ich fange um 8 Uhr an. (I begin at 8 o'clock.)

In this sentence, "an" is the separable prefix, and it has been separated from the base verb "fangen" and moved to the end of the sentence.

Rules for Separable Verbs[edit | edit source]

There are a few rules to keep in mind when using separable verbs in German:

  • In the present tense, the separable prefix is usually placed at the end of the sentence.
  • In the past tense, the separable prefix is placed at the end of the sentence, or it can be attached to the base verb.
  • In the infinitive form, the separable prefix is attached to the base verb.
  • In subordinate clauses, the separable prefix is placed at the end of the sentence.
