As an Armenian language teacher, I have been teaching Armenian for 20 years, and in this lesson, we will introduce basic Armenian words and phrases related to family members and relationships. This lesson is part of the "Complete 0 to A1 Armenian Course" and is recommended for beginners.

Let's start by introducing some basic vocabulary terms related to family members and relationships in Armenian.

Family Members

Immediate Family

Family members who are directly related to you are considered immediate family. Here are some basic words for immediate family in Armenian.

  • մայր - mayr - mother
  • հայր - hayr - father
  • եղբայր - yeghbayr - sibling
  • եգիպտական - egyptakan - spouse
  • երեկոյան հայր - erekoian hayr - father-in-law
  • երեկոյան մայր - erekoian mayr - mother-in-law
  • դասընթացում քո ընտանիքը -dasentakum ko entanik' - your family in school

Extended Family

Extended family members are relatives beyond your immediate family, like aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. Here are some Armenian words for your extended family:

  • ամուսն - amusn - grandmother
  • պապիկ - papik - grandfather
  • եղջյուր - yeghjyur - daughter
  • անուշ - anush - son
  • մայրական կենսաբանություն - mayrakan kensabanoutyun - maternal family
  • հայրական կենսաբանություն - hayrakan kensabanoutyun - paternal family
  • ազգավոր - azgavor - uncle
  • քույր - k'uyr - sister
  • եղինակ - eghinak - cousin
  • երեխա - erekha - child
  • Շաբաշ - Shabash - a special Armenian way of saying cousin

Relationships

Armenians use different words and phrases to express their connection with others. Below are some basic words and phrases for various relationships in Armenian:

  • ընդամենը - endaman - partner
  • ընդունել - endunel - accept
  • ընկեր - engker - friend
  • աստղաբույժ - astghabouj - astrologer
  • դիմակ - dimak - messenger, message
  • մտածում - mtatsum - thinking
  • սեր - ser - love
  • սփյուռք - sp'yurk' - kiss
  • քաղաքական կերպար - k'aghakakan kerp'ar - civil marriage
  • օրական կերպար - orakan kerp'ar - traditional marriage
