As a Bulgarian language teacher with 20 years of experience, I am excited to present this lesson on Making Special Requests at a Restaurant. By mastering these basic sentences and phrases, you will be able to communicate your needs and preferences to your server with ease.

Vocabulary

Below are some key vocabulary words that will help you make special requests at a restaurant:

Use these words and phrases to make your requests clear to your server.

Sentences

When making special requests, it's helpful to have some complete sentences in mind. Here are a few examples:

  • Моля, можете ли да направите нещо без глутен?
 * Molya, mozhete li da napravite neshto bez gluten?
 * Could you make something gluten-free, please?
  • Моля, искам да поръчам вегетарианско ястие.
 * Molya, iskam da poracham vegetariansko yastie.
 * I would like to order a vegetarian dish, please.
  • Можете ли да ми препоръчате нещо леко?
 * Mozhete li da mi preporachate neshto leko?
 * Can you recommend something light, please?
  • Бих искал/а половин порция от това ястие, моля.
 * Bih iskal/a polovin porciya ot tova yastie, molya.
 * I would like a half-portion of this dish, please.
  • Моля, да ми донесете още вода, благодаря.
 * Molya, da mi donesete oshte voda, blagodarya.
 * Please bring me more water, thank you.

Remember to say "моля" (molya) before making your request to be polite, and "благодаря" (blagodarya) to thank your server afterwards.

Culture Corner

In Bulgaria, it is common to start a meal with a salad, either a Shopska salad or a green salad with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and other vegetables. Bulgarians enjoy hearty soups such as tarator, a cold soup made with yogurt and cucumbers, and bob chorba, a bean soup with vegetables and spices. Main courses often include grilled meats such as kebapche, kyufte, and shishche, as well as stews like banski staretz and kavarma. Don't forget to try some of the delicious Bulgarian wines with your meal!
