Kazakh Vocabulary → Greetings and Basic Expressions → Numbers and Counting

Counting and numbers are fundamental in any language, and Kazakh is no exception. In this lesson, we will learn how to count from 0 to 100 in Kazakh, and also how to use numbers in different contexts.

Basic numbers

Let's start with the basic numbers from 0 to 10:

Kazakh Pronunciation English
нөл nól zero
бір bir one
екі eki two
үш üsh three
төрт tört four
бес bes five
алты alty six
жеті jeti seven
сегіз segiz eight
тоқсан toqsan nine
он on ten

Notice that the pronunciation of the letters "ө" and "ұ" is quite unique to Kazakh and may require some practice.

From 11 to 20

From 11 to 19, we can form the numbers by adding the postfix "-он" to the corresponding digits:

Kazakh Pronunciation English
он бір on bir eleven
он екі on eki twelve
он үш on üsh thirteen
он төрт on tört fourteen
он бес on bes fifteen
он алты on alty sixteen
он жеті on jeti seventeen
он сегіз on segiz eighteen
он тоқсан on toqsan nineteen

For 20, we add the postfix "-ымза" to "екі" (two):

Kazakh Pronunciation English
жиырма jıyrma twenty

Decades

To form the words for the decades, we add "-ы" to the corresponding digit, followed by the word for ten without the postfix "-н":

Kazakh Pronunciation English
қырық qyrıq forty
елу elw fifty
алпыс alpıs sixty
жетпіс jetpıs seventy
сексен seksen eighty
тоқсаннан toqsannan ninety

For example, "елу екі" (fifty two).

Hundreds

To form numbers in the hundreds, we first state the number of hundreds, followed by "жүз" (hundred), and then the number of tens and units:

Kazakh Pronunciation English
бір жүз bir jüz one hundred
екі жүз eki jüz two hundred
үш жүз üsh jüz three hundred
төрт жүз tört jüz four hundred
бес жүз bes jüz five hundred
алты жүз alty jüz six hundred
жеті жүз jeti jüz seven hundred
сегіз жүз segiz jüz eight hundred
тоқсан жүз toqsan jüz nine hundred

For example, "екі жүз үш төрт" (two hundred thirty four).

Other uses of numbers

In addition to counting, numbers are also used in various contexts, such as telling time, expressing dates, or giving prices. Here are some examples:

  • To tell time, we use a combination of the words for the hours (in digits) and minutes (in words). For example, "сағат бірде" (one o'clock), "сағат он бестен бир басқа не?" (what time is it?).
  • To express dates, we use the ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.) followed by the name of the month. For example, "бірінші наурыз" (March 1st), "үшінші тамыз" (July 3rd).
  • When giving prices, we use the word "тұн" (tenge) followed by the digits for the whole part and "ақша" (cents) followed by the digits for the fractional part. For example, "бес мың тұн алты қазына тілі" (5,600 tenge for a treasure map).

It is important to note that the plural forms in Kazakh can vary depending on the numeral, the noun, and the situation. This topic will be addressed in later lessons in this course.

That's it for now. Practice counting and using numbers in different contexts to improve your Kazakh skills.
