Kazakh Grammar → Kazakh Cases → Locative Case

As a Kazakh language teacher with over 20 years of experience, I am excited to introduce the "Locative Case" in Kazakh grammar. This case is used to express location and proximity. In this lesson, you will learn how to use the Kazakh Locative Case in sentences and use it for expressing location and proximity.

What is the Locative Case?

The Locative case is one of the six cases in the Kazakh language. It is used to indicate the location or position of the object or person in a sentence. It answers the questions "where?" or "in what place?" in Kazakh. The Locative Case is used after prepositions such as "in," "on," "at," and "by."

For example:

  • Біз Алматыда жүрдік. (Biz Almatyda jurdik.) - We lived in Almaty.
  • Мен кітап жайда қойдым. (Men kitap jayda koıdym.) - I put the book on the shelf.

In both examples, the Locative case is used to indicate the location of the object in the sentence.

How to Use the Locative Case

In Kazakh, the Locative Case is formed by adding a suffix "-да/-де" to the noun stem. The final vowel of the noun stem changes according to the vowel harmony rules. For example, if the vowel in the noun stem is a front vowel, the suffix "-да" will be added. If the vowel in the noun stem is a back vowel, the suffix "-де" will be added.

|- | Көшеде || Kösede || on the street |- | үйде || üyde || at home |- | орнда || ornda || at the place |- | театрда || teatrda || at the theater |}

Once you know how to form the Locative Case, you can use it to describe the location of the object or person in the sentence. Here are some examples:

  • Сабақ орында - (Sabak orında) - In the classroom.
  • Мұхит мүлдемде - (Muhyt mldemde) - In the environment.
  • Ақша даурысқа шықты. - (Aqşa daurysqa şyqtı.) - I went to the bank.

Exceptions

There are certain exceptions to the rule of adding "-да/-де". In some cases, the suffix may be replaced with a different suffix to maintain the correct pronunciation. For example:

  • тұрған осында - (turğan osında) - sitting here
  • жүрген бүгінде - (jürgen bügınde) - walking today
  • жазда - (jazda) - in summer

Practice Sentences

Here are some sentences to practice using the Locative case:

  • Мекеніміздегі дәмтерімізді тазала. - (Mekenimizdegı dämterimizdı tazala.) - Clean the windows in our house.
  • Ақтөбеде ертеңү сағат екіде тапсырыс беріңіз. - (Aqtöbede erteñü saat ekide tapsyrys beriñiz.) - Place an order at two o'clock tomorrow in Aktobe.
  • Шаңырауда шамал шықты. - (Şańıraudada şamal şıqtı.) - The wind came up in the morning.
