Bulgarian Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Bulgarian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Bulgarian. We will look at the conjugation of the verb, as well as some examples of how it is used in sentences.

The verb "to be" in Bulgarian is "съм" (sǎm). It is an irregular verb, which means that it does not follow the same conjugation pattern as other verbs. Here is the conjugation of the verb "to be" in Bulgarian:

Person Singular Plural
I съм (sǎm) сме (smé)
You си (sí) сте (sté)
He/She/It е (ye) са (sá)

The verb "to be" is used in many different ways in Bulgarian. Here are some examples of how it is used:

  • To describe someone or something:
  • Той е моя брат (toy ye moya brat) - He is my brother.
  • Тя е моята приятелка (tya ye moyata priyatelka) - She is my friend.
  • Това е моята къща (tova ye moyata kŭshta) - This is my house.
  • To indicate possession:
  • Той е моят брат (toy ye moyat brat) - He is my brother.
  • Тя е моята приятелка (tya ye moyata priyatelka) - She is my friend.
  • Това е моята къща (tova ye moyata kŭshta) - This is my house.
  • To indicate location:
  • Той е тук (toy ye tuk) - He is here.
  • Тя е там (tya ye tam) - She is there.
  • Това е там (tova ye tam) - This is there.
  • To indicate time:
  • Сега е ден (sega ye den) - It is day now.
  • Вечерта е нощ (vecherta ye nosht) - It is night now.
  • Утре ще бъде ден (utre shte bŭde den) - It will be day tomorrow.

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Здравейте! (zdraveyté!) - Hello!
  • Person 2: Здравейте! Как сте? (zdraveyté! kak sté?) - Hello! How are you?
  • Person 1: Добре съм. А ти? (dobre sǎm. a ti?) - I'm good. And you?
  • Person 2: Добре съм. (dobre sǎm.) - I'm good.
