Introduction

=== What is Passive Voice? ===

Passive voice is a grammatical construction where the subject of the sentence is acted upon by the verb. In contrast to active voice, where the subject performs the action, passive voice shifts the focus to the action itself or the receiver of the action.

For example:

* Active: The teacher (subject) teaches (verb) the students (object).

* Passive: The students (subject) are taught (verb) by the teacher (agent).

In Sindhi, this structure is similarly used to emphasize the action rather than the doer.

=== Importance of Passive Voice in Sindhi ===

Learning the passive voice is essential for a few reasons:

* '''Variety in Communication''': It allows for greater variation in sentence structure, making your speech and writing more engaging.

* '''Focus on Action''': It helps in emphasizing the action or its recipient, which can be particularly useful in formal writing or storytelling.

* '''Cultural Context''': In Sindhi culture, storytelling often involves a focus on events rather than the individuals involved, making the passive voice a common feature.

=== Structure of Passive Voice in Sindhi ===

To form a passive sentence in Sindhi, you generally follow this structure:

'''[Subject] + [Form of 'to be'] + [Past Participle] + [by + Agent (optional)]'''

Let's break this down further with examples.

Welcome to the advanced grammar section of the Complete 0 to A1 Sindhi Course. In this lesson, we will learn about the Passive Voice in Sindhi. The passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. Instead of focusing on who or what is performing the action, the focus is on the action itself. For example, "The book was read by the student" is a passive sentence where the focus is on the book being read rather than who read the book. In this lesson, we will learn how to form passive sentences in Sindhi, including changing active sentences to passive and using passive verbs.
| تحفو ڏنو ويو || Tuhfo dino vayo || The gift was given

Forming Passive Sentences in Sindhi

|-

The passive voice is formed by using the verb "جو" (jo) in Sindhi. This is how you form a passive sentence in Sindhi:
| فلم ڏٺي وئي || Film dithi vayi || The film was watched

|-

Put the object of the active sentence as the subject of the passive sentence.

Put the verb "جو" (jo) after the object.

Use the past participle form of the main verb.

If needed, add the agent of the verb with the preposition "وارِ" (war).

Let's look at an example:
| جنگل ۾ جانور ڏٺا ويا || Jungle mein janwar ditha waya || Animals were seen in the jungle

Active sentence: شہزادو شعر سڄي ٿيو. (Shahzado shaer suchi thiyo.) - Shahzad wrote a poem.
|-
Passive sentence: شعر جو شہزادو سڄي ٿيو. (Shaer jo Shahzado suchi thiyo.) - The poem was written by Shahzad.

In the passive sentence, شعر (shaer) which means "poem" is the object in active voice that becomes the subject in passive voice. The verb "ٿيو" (thiyo) was changed to "جو" (jo) and the agent "شہزادو" (Shahzad) was added with the preposition "وارِ" (war).
| تصوير ٺاهي وئي || Tasveer thaahi vayi || The picture was made

Changing Active Sentences to Passive Sentences

|-

To change an active sentence to a passive sentence, follow these steps:
| ترانه ڳايو ويو || Tarana gayo vayo || The song was sung

|}

Identify the object of the active sentence.

Make it the subject of the passive sentence.

Use the appropriate form of the verb "جو" (jo) after the object.

Use the past participle of the main verb instead of the present or past tense.

Add the agent of the verb with the preposition "وارِ" (war) if necessary.

Here is an example:
=== Changing Active Sentences to Passive ===

Active sentence: پنجهير پيار aهيو ٿيو. (Panjhir payar ahiyo thiyo.) - The pigeon loved the peas.
Now that we understand how to form passive sentences, let’s see how to convert active sentences into passive.
Passive sentence: پيار جو پنجهير aهيو ٿيو. (Payar jo panjhir ahiyo thiyo.) - The peas were loved by the pigeon.

In the passive sentence, "پيار" (payar) is the object in active voice that becomes the subject in passive voice. The verb "ٿيو" (thiyo) was changed to "جو" (jo). No agent was used in this example.
1. '''Identify the Subject, Verb, and Object''': First, find out who is performing the action (subject), what the action is (verb), and who is receiving the action (object).

Using Passive Verbs in Sindhi

2. '''Rearrange the Sentence''': Move the object to the front to become the new subject.

Passive verbs are verbs that show the subject receiving the action instead of performing the action. In Sindhi, passive verbs are formed by using the verb "جو" (jo) and the root form of the verb. The passive verb is then conjugated to match the gender and number of the subject. Here is an example:
3. '''Change the Verb Form''': Use the appropriate form of 'to be' and the past participle of the verb.

Verb: لڏيو (ladhyo) - to find
4. '''Add the Original Subject (Optional)''': You can include the original subject using “by” if necessary.
Passive verb: لڏي جو (ladhy jo) - to be found

Here is an example of a passive verb in a sentence:
=== Using Passive Verbs ===

In Sindhi, passive verbs are formed by combining a form of the verb 'to be' with the past participle. This structure is quite similar to English, making it easier for English speakers to grasp.

Active sentence: مڻهون قرآن تي ايمان ٽڪويل. (Munhon Quran ti imaan tikawil.) - We believe in the Quran.
The main passive verbs in Sindhi are:
Passive sentence: ايمان جو (قرآن تي) ٽڪيو. (Imaan jo (Quran ti) tikyo.) - The Quran is believed in (by us).

In the passive sentence, "ايمان جو" (imaan jo) is the passive form of the verb "ٽڪويل" (tikawil) and "قرآن تي" (Quran ti) is the agent used with the preposition "وارِ" (war).
* ٿيڻ (thiyun) - to be

* هجڻ (hujan) - to exist

SindhiGrammar0 to A1 Course → Passive Voice

Welcome to this exciting lesson on Passive Voice in Sindhi! Understanding how to use the passive voice is crucial for effective communication, as it allows you to focus on the action itself rather than the subject performing the action. This can be particularly useful in various contexts, such as storytelling, news reporting, and even everyday conversations.

In this lesson, we will explore how to form passive sentences in Sindhi, how to change active sentences to passive, and how to use passive verbs. By the end of this lesson, you will have a solid understanding of passive voice in Sindhi and be able to apply this knowledge to your speaking and writing.

What is Passive Voice?[edit | edit source]

Passive voice is a grammatical construction where the subject of the sentence is acted upon by the verb. In contrast to active voice, where the subject performs the action, passive voice shifts the focus to the action itself or the receiver of the action.

For example:

 • Active: The teacher (subject) teaches (verb) the students (object).
 • Passive: The students (subject) are taught (verb) by the teacher (agent).

In Sindhi, this structure is similarly used to emphasize the action rather than the doer.

Importance of Passive Voice in Sindhi[edit | edit source]

Learning the passive voice is essential for a few reasons:

 • Variety in Communication: It allows for greater variation in sentence structure, making your speech and writing more engaging.
 • Focus on Action: It helps in emphasizing the action or its recipient, which can be particularly useful in formal writing or storytelling.
 • Cultural Context: In Sindhi culture, storytelling often involves a focus on events rather than the individuals involved, making the passive voice a common feature.

Structure of Passive Voice in Sindhi[edit | edit source]

To form a passive sentence in Sindhi, you generally follow this structure:

[Subject] + [Form of 'to be'] + [Past Participle] + [by + Agent (optional)]

Let's break this down further with examples.

Examples of Passive Voice Formation[edit | edit source]

We will begin with a few examples to illustrate the formation of passive sentences in Sindhi.

Sindhi Pronunciation English
ڪتاب پڙهيو ويو Kitab parhiyo vayo The book was read
خط لکيو ويو Khat likhiyo vayo The letter was written
کاڌو تيار ڪيو ويو Khado tayar karyo vayo The food was prepared
گهر ساف ڪيو ويو Ghar saaf karyo vayo The house was cleaned
راند کيڏيو ويو Rand kheediyo vayo The game was played
تحفو ڏنو ويو Tuhfo dino vayo The gift was given
فلم ڏٺي وئي Film dithi vayi The film was watched
جنگل ۾ جانور ڏٺا ويا Jungle mein janwar ditha waya Animals were seen in the jungle
تصوير ٺاهي وئي Tasveer thaahi vayi The picture was made
ترانه ڳايو ويو Tarana gayo vayo The song was sung

Changing Active Sentences to Passive[edit | edit source]

Now that we understand how to form passive sentences, let’s see how to convert active sentences into passive.

1. Identify the Subject, Verb, and Object: First, find out who is performing the action (subject), what the action is (verb), and who is receiving the action (object).

2. Rearrange the Sentence: Move the object to the front to become the new subject.

3. Change the Verb Form: Use the appropriate form of 'to be' and the past participle of the verb.

4. Add the Original Subject (Optional): You can include the original subject using “by” if necessary.

Examples of Changing Active to Passive[edit | edit source]

Let's take a look at some examples where we convert active sentences to passive.

Using Passive Verbs[edit | edit source]

In Sindhi, passive verbs are formed by combining a form of the verb 'to be' with the past participle. This structure is quite similar to English, making it easier for English speakers to grasp.

The main passive verbs in Sindhi are:

 • ٿيڻ (thiyun) - to be
 • هجڻ (hujan) - to exist

These verbs are conjugated according to the subject's tense and number.

== Conjugation of Passive Verbs

The verb 'to be' is an essential part of forming passive voice in any language. In Sindhi, it can be conjugated based on the subject's gender and number.

Here’s a quick overview of how 'to be' is conjugated in passive sentences:

| Tense | Singular (Male) | Singular (Female) | Plural |

|---------------|-----------------|-------------------|---------|

| Present | آهي (aahe) | آهي (aahe) | آھن (aahein) |

| Past | هو (hayo) | هئي (hui) | هئا (haya) |

| Future | ٿيندو (thindo) | ٿيندي (thindi) | ٿيندا (thinda) |

Examples of Passive Verbs[edit | edit source]

Let’s examine how passive verbs are used in sentences.
