Korean Festivals

Korean Festivals are celebrated throughout the year and reflect the country's rich cultural heritage. Each festival has its own unique characteristics and traditions, making them a fascinating way to learn about Korean history and culture. In this lesson, we will explore some of the most famous Korean Festivals:

Seollal (Lunar New Year)

Seollal, also known as Lunar New Year, is one of the most important Korean holidays. It usually falls between late January and mid-February and is a time for family reunions, traditional food, and ancestral rites. During Seollal, Koreans wear colorful Hanbok (Korean traditional clothing), play games, and perform traditional dances such as the Ganggangsullae. One of the main dishes served during Seollal is Tteokguk, a traditional Korean soup made of sliced rice cakes in beef broth.

Buddha's Birthday

Buddha's Birthday, also known as Seokka Tanshin-il, is a celebration of the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. It usually falls in May and is a time for Koreans to pray for peace and happiness. One of the most famous traditions during Buddha's Birthday is the Lotus Lantern Festival. During this festival, lanterns in various shapes and sizes are lit and paraded through the streets.

Chuseok (Harvest Festival)

Chuseok, also known as the Harvest Moon Festival, is one of the most important harvest festivals in Korea. It usually falls in September and is a time for family reunions, thanksgiving, and paying respect to ancestors. Koreans perform traditional folk games such as the Ganggangsullae dance and Seoljanggu dance during Chuseok. One of the main dishes served during Chuseok is Songpyeon, a type of rice cake filled with sweet sesame, bean paste, or chestnuts.
