History
Spain has a long and fascinating history that has left its mark on the country's culture to this day. Here are some interesting historical facts:
- Spain was once ruled by the Roman Empire, which left behind many impressive architectural and engineering feats, such as the aqueducts in Segovia and the amphitheater in Mérida.
- During medieval times, Spain was known for its 'Reconquista' - a period of history when Christian kingdoms fought to take back the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors, who had ruled it for centuries.
- In 1492, Spain's Catholic monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand sponsored Christopher Columbus's voyage to find a new trade route to Asia. Instead, he discovered the New World, forever changing the course of history.
