سمى الرومان أيام الأسبوع بعد الأجرام السماوية الرئيسية: القمر والشمس والكواكب الرئيسية.

سميت تلك الأجرام السماوية على اسم الآلهة الرومانية.

Dies Lovis	يوم الخميس	يوم المشتري (الإله الروماني الذي خلق الرعد والبرق ، راعي الدولة الرومانية). جوف هو لقب كوكب المشتري
Dies Veneris	جمعة	يوم فينوس (إلهة الحب والجمال الرومانية)
Dies Saturni	السبت	يوم زحل (إله الزراعة الروماني)
