رومیان روزهای هفته را به نام اجرام اصلی آسمانی نامگذاری کردند: ماه، خورشید و سیارات اصلی.

این اجرام آسمانی به نام خدایان رومی نامگذاری شده بودند.

Dies Lunae	دوشنبه	روز ماه
Dies Martis	سهشنبه	روز مریخ (خدای جنگ رومی)
Dies Mercurii	چهار شنبه	day of Mercury (Roman messenger of the gods and god of commerce, travel, thievery, eloquence, and science.)
Dies Lovis	پنج شنبه	روز مشتری (خدای رومی که رعد و برق و رعد و برق را ایجاد کرد؛ حامی دولت روم). جوو نام مستعار مشتری است
Dies Veneris	جمعه	روز زهره (الهه رومی عشق و زیبایی)
Dies Saturni	شنبه	روز زحل (خدای کشاورزی رومی)
