How to Describe Someone's Appearance and Personality

The Focus of this Lesson is on How to Describe Someone's Appearance and Personality.

''Han har mörkt hår och blåa ögon.''

'"He has dark hair and blue eyes."'

In this lesson, we'll continue to learn how to describe someone's appearance or personality. In a previous lesson, we learned how to do this by using the verb att vara ("to be"). In this lesson, we'll instead use the verb att ha, which corresponds to the English "to have." To begin with, we'll review the sentences that appear in this lesson's dialogue which used this verb when describing someone's appearance or personality.

Examples from this dialogue:

  1. Han har mörkt hår och blåa ögon. "He has dark hair and blue eyes."
  2. Han har humor och ett stort hjärta. "He has humor and a big heart."

In the previous lesson, when we learned how to form sentences like, Hon är söt ("She's cute.") and, Jag är smart ("I'm smart."). In this lesson, we'll use a similar sentence structure, that is, a sentence that starts off with a personal pronoun such as han, hon, jag, or du ("he," "she," "I," or "you"). After the personal pronoun comes a verb, which in this lesson will be the present tense of the verb att ha ("to have"), which is har ("has"). This is then followed by words describing either an aspect of someone's appearance or their personality. Let's first start by looking at some word combinations that can describe someone's appearance.

Swedish / English / Swedish / English

blå ögon / "blue eyes" / långt hår / "long hair"

bruna ögon / "brown eyes" / kort hår / "short hair"

långa ben / "long legs" / ett smalt ansikte / "a narrow face"

korta ben / "short legs" / ett runt ansikte / "a round face"

These sets of words can now be used to create sentences that describes someone's appearance. Let's have a look at some examples.

  1. Han har korta ben. "He has short legs."
  2. Hon har ett smalt ansikte. "She has a narrow face."
  3. Han har kort hår."He has short hair."

Describing someone's personality is equally simple. We just use a personal pronoun, followed by the verb har ("have"), and then words that describe someone's personality.

Swedish / English / Swedish / English

charm / "charm" / ett stort hjärta / "a big heart"

humor / "humor" / temperament / "temperament"

ingen humor / "no humor" / dålig humor / "a bad sense of humor"

ingen charm / "no charm" / ett dåligt temperament / "a bad temper"

Let's now look at some sentences where we use these sets of words to describe someone's personality.

  1. Hon har charm. "She has charm."
  2. Han har ett dåligt temperament. "He has a bad temper."
  3. Hon har dålig humor."She has a bad sense of humor."
