The Ulugh Beg Observatory near Samarkand keeps a record of all animal sightings around the area, and you might be lucky to see some of these beautiful animals nearby when you visit Uzbekistan.

Insects and Reptiles[edit | edit source]

While they are not always the most beloved creatures in the animal kingdom, insects and reptiles have always played an important role in various ecosystems. In Uzbekistan, there is no shortage of such animals, from tiny beetles to venomous snakes. Here are some words to learn about them:

Northern Uzbek Pronunciation English

In Uzbekistan, many believe that seeing a lizard inside a house or a car can bring bad luck, especially if it is black. But on the other hand, seeing a scorpion can bring good fortune, prosperity, and even protection from harm. Be careful, though... scorpions are often found in the desert, and their venom can be quite dangerous.
