In this lesson, we will focus on the vocabulary related to family members. Family is very important in Uzbek culture, and there are specific terms used to identify different members.

Immediate Family

Let's start with the immediate family members. These are the people who are closely related to you and live in the same household.

боқа	bo'ka	son
диға	di'g'a	daughter
кае	kae	brother
акак	akak	elder brother
жива	jiva	sister
апак	apak	elder sister
қизкалби	qizkalbi	female cousin (from father's side)
ўқкул	o'qkul	male cousin (from father's side)

- Dialogue:

• Person 1: Оталинг кузи! (Otalig ku zi!) [Translation: Hello, father!]
• Person 2: Ассалому алайкум, боқа. Профессиянг нимаку? (Assalomu alaykum, bo'ka. Professiyanag nimaku?) [Translation: Hello, son. What is your profession?]

Extended Family

In Uzbek culture, the extended family is also very important. This includes grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Here are some vocabulary words for extended family members:

ёғин	yog'in	grandmother
чокай	chokay	aunt (father's sister)
мамай	mamay	aunt (mother's sister)
чакку	chakku	uncle (father's brother)
ко'ка	ko'ka	uncle (mother's brother)
қизтим	qiztim	female cousin (from mother's side)
ўқось	o'kos	male cousin (from mother's side)

- Dialogue:

• Person 1: Баба, юртимга хуш келибсиз! (Baba, yurtimga hush kelibsiz!) [Translation: Welcome to my home, grandfather!]
• Person 2: Раксанабо, қизкалбим, сизга қариндош бўлиб хурсандман (Raxsanabo, qizkalbim, sizga qarindosh bo'lib xursandman) [Translation: Raxsanabo, my female cousin, I'm happy to be your friend.]

In-Laws

When someone gets married, their spouse's family becomes their in-laws. Here are some vocabulary words for in-laws:

ҳамоҳанги	hamohangi	spouse
куйин	kuyin	sister-in-law
хола куяни	hola kuyani	brother-in-law

- Dialogue:

• Person 1: Шўҳаримнинг ёғисиб зурриёти вақтим юккен экан (Shoharimning yog'isib zurriyoti vaqtim yukken ekan) [Translation: My husband's sister-in-law is taking up all my time.]
• Person 2: Холамда хамдаликда қилади, олда биларми (Xolamda hamdolikda qiladi, olda bilarmi) [Translation: My brother-in-law does everything for my wife, I don't know why.]

Adjectives to describe family members

In Uzbek, there are specific adjectives that are used to describe family members based on their role in the family. Here are some examples:

оғай	og'ay	fatherly (for a male)
ёғай	yo'gay	motherly (for a female)
ўммажон	ummajon	aunt-like (for an older female cousin)
қака	qaka	uncle-like (for an older male cousin)
хоним	honim	lady (for a married woman)
бий	biy	sir (for a married man)

- Dialogue:

• Person 1: ўммажоним, сиз ҳеч ёмонлик келмасди (Ummajonim, siz hech yomonlik kelmasdi) [Translation: My older female cousin, nothing bad happened to you, did it?]
• Person 2: Хоним, сизнинг выборинг ҳақида мени хабардор қилинг (Honim, sizning vyboring haqida meni xabardor qiling) [Translation: Lady, keep me informed about your choice.]
