What is a plural?

A plural is the form of a word that represents more than one person, animal, place, thing or concept. In Northern Uzbek, as in many other languages, plurals are formed by adding a suffix to the singular form of a noun or an adjective.

Let's take the word "kitob" (book) as an example. To create its plural form, we add the suffix "-lar" to it. The plural form of "kitob" is therefore "kitoblar" (books).

Here is a list of some common plural suffixes in Northern Uzbek: - -lar: used with most nouns and adjectives ending in a vowel sound - -lar/-ler: used with most nouns and adjectives ending in a consonant sound

1. Plurals with the suffix -lar/-ler This suffix is added to most of the words ending in a consonant sound.

Plurals of adjectives

Adjectives in Northern Uzbek can also take plural forms. The plural forms of adjectives are formed by adding the appropriate plural suffixes to their singular form.

1. Plurals with the suffix -lar/-ler

2. Plurals with the suffix -lar

yomon	['jo:mon]	bad

In Northern Uzbek, some adjectives are invariable, which means that their singular and plural form is the same. For example: "qari" (large), "kichik" (small), "oʻrtacha" (average), and "ajoyib" (amazing).

Plurals in context

Let's have a conversation in Northern Uzbek using plurals:

• Person 1: Salom, Bugun uyidan chiqib, koʻp kitoblar sotib oldim. ("Hello, today I went out of the house and bought many books.")
• Person 2: Qayerdan sotib oldingiz? ("Where did you buy them?")
• Person 1: Bozoridan sotib oldim. ("I bought them from the market.")
• Person 2: Ajoyib! Uyda bu kitoblar qayerga qoʻygan? ("Amazing! Where did you put these books at home?")
• Person 1: Bu kitoblar kitobxonada turadi. ("These books will be in the library.")
