Divorce in India

A couple of decades ago, the word divorce wouldn’t have found its way into a Hindi phrasebook.

Divorces used to be almost unheard of in India.

Today though, mores are changing, especially in the major metropolises.

There is a formal Hindi word for divorce, vivāh-vicched (marriage-severing), but it sounds too high-falutin’ to be used in everyday speech.

The Indian judicial system has now initiated the proclamation of various laws based on the different religions: Hindus, Christians, and Muslims are governed under separate marriage acts and grounds for divorce in India.

A divorce is among the most traumatic occurrences for any couple.

To add to this, it can also be a long-winded and costly affair in India if divorce is contested. Even couples who mutually agree to the divorce, however, must prove that they have been separated for a year before the courts consider their plea.
