Algerian Arabic Vocabulary - Geography

In this lesson, we're going to learn some Algerian Arabic vocabulary related to geography. This is important if you're traveling to Algeria or want to communicate about geography subjects with an Algerian Arabic speaker. So let's get started! 🌍

Landforms[edit | edit source]

Algeria has a diverse environment including desert, coastal areas and mountains. Here are some Algerian Arabic words for some common landforms:

Algerian Arabic Pronunciation English
الصحراء es-SaHra' Desert
السهل as-Sahl Plain
الجبل el-Jbel Mountain
التلة et-Tla Hill
المنحدر el-MenHadr Slope

Here's a dialogue to see some of these words in context:

  • Person 1: في الصحراء الأهمّ شيء هو الماء. (In the desert, the most important thing is water)
  • Person 2: نعم، ولكن سهول الجزائر جميلة أيضاً. (Yes, but the plains of Algeria are beautiful as well.)

Being a country with a Mediterranean coastline, Algeria has numerous bodies of water. Here are some vocabulary words for those water bodies:

Here are some vocabulary words and phrases to help you give directions or talk about locations in Algerian Arabic:
