Standard Arabic Vocabulary → Weather vocabulary → Talking about the weather

Weather affects our lives every day, and being able to talk about it in Arabic can be particularly useful. In this lesson, we will learn some common weather-related words and phrases in Standard Arabic.

Basic weather vocabulary

Let's start with some common words related to different weather conditions and phenomena:

Standard Arabic Pronunciation English Translation
طقس /taqs/ weather
شمس /shams/ sun
قمر /qamar/ moon
نجوم /nujuum/ stars
سماء /samaa'/ sky
غيمة /ghaymah/ cloud
رياح /ryaah/ wind
برد /bard/ hail
ثلج /thalj/ snow
مطر /matar/ rain

Talking about the weather

Using the weather vocabulary we just learned, let's practice some common phrases to talk about the weather:

  • الطقس اليوم حار جدًا. (al-Taqs al-yawm haar jiddan.) - The weather is very hot today.
  • لا تنسَ أن تحمل مظلتك، لأنَّه سيكون هناك أمطار. (La tansa an tahmil mazlatak, li'annahu sayakun hunaaka amtaar.) - Don't forget to bring your umbrella because it's going to rain.
  • السماء صافية اليوم. (Al-samaa' saafiya al-yawm.) - The sky is clear today.
  • النجوم تلمع في السماء الليلة. (An-nujuum talmi' fi as-samaa' al-laylah.) - The stars are shining in the sky tonight.
  • الرياح شديدة اليوم. (Ar-ryaah shadidah al-yawm.) - The wind is strong today.
  • البرد يتساقط بشدة اليوم. (Al-bard yatasaaqut bishiddah al-yawm.) - The hail is falling heavily today.
  • يتوقع أن يكون هناك ثلوج غدًا. (Yatawqa' 'an yakun hunaaka thuluuj ghadaan.) - It's expected to snow tomorrow.

Remember that in Arabic, the adjective always comes after the noun, so for example, we say "weather hot" instead of "hot weather". Similarly, when using adjectives to describe the weather, the adjective must agree in gender and number with the noun it modifies.

I hope this lesson was helpful and that you feel more confident talking about the weather in Standard Arabic. As with any language, practice makes perfect so try to use these phrases in your daily conversations.
