In Arabic, a preposition is called "harf jarr" (حرف جر), which literally means "a preposition letter". Learning the basic prepositions of the Arabic language is essential in order to form sentences correctly. In this lesson, you will learn some of the most common basic prepositions and their usage in Arabic.

The following table contains some of the most basic prepositions in the Arabic language. Memorize them and practice using them in sentences.

Here are some examples of using the basic prepositions you have learned.
- في (fee) - in, inside, at, on
- I am in my room. - أنا في غرفتي. (ana fee gharfeti)
- The book is on the table. - الكتاب على الطاولة. (al-kitab 'ala at-tawila)
- The cat is under the chair. - القط تحت الكرسي. (al-qitt taht al-kursi)
- على ('ala) - on, upon, over, above
- The picture is on the wall. - الصورة على الحائط. (as-sura 'ala al-hatif)
- The bird is flying over the tree. - الطائر يطير فوق الشجرة. (at-ta'ir yatir fuq ash-shajara)
- She put the book on the shelf. - وضعت الكتاب على الرف. (wada't al-kitab 'ala ar-raff)
- تحت (taht) - under, below, beneath
- The rabbit is under the table. - الأرنب تحت الطاولة. (al-'arnab taht at-tawilah)
- The keys are below the pillow. - المفاتيح تحت الوسادة. (al-mafatih taht al-wasada)
- خارج (kharij) - out, outside, beyond, except
- It is raining outside. - الأمطار خارج الآن. (al-amtar kharij al-an)
- She is outside waiting for her friend. - هي خارج تنتظر صديقتها. (hiya kharij tantathir sadiqatiha)
- بجانب (b'janib) - next to, beside, by, near
- The coffee cup is next to the computer. - فنجان القهوة بجانب الحاسوب. (finjan al-qahwah b'janib al-hasub)
- He sat beside his friend. - جلس بجانب صديقه. (jalis b'janib sadiqahu)
- أمام (amam) - in front of, before, ahead
- The car is in front of the building. - السيارة أمام المبنى. (as-sayara amam al-mabna)
- She stood in front of the mirror. - وقفت أمام المرآة. (waqfat amam al-mir'ah)
- خلف (khalf) - behind, after, back
- The teacher is standing behind the desk. - المدرسة واقفة خلف المكتب. (al-mudarisa waqfah khalf al-maktab)
- He left his coat behind in the car. - ترك المعطف خلفه في السيارة. (taraka al-mu'taf khalfa fi as-sayara)
