The basics of forming questions[edit | edit source]
In Turkmen, questions can be formed by using a question word followed by the subject and verb. The word order in questions is subject-verb-object, the same as in declarative sentences. For example:
- Sen okulyňa gitdin mi? (Did you go to school?)
- Ol kitap okaýar mı? (Does he/she read books?)

Turkmen has several question words that are used to seek specific information. Here are some of the most commonly used ones:
a) Kim - Who This word is used to ask about the identity of a person. For example:
- Kim bu adam? (Who is this man?)
- Kim siz? (Who are you?)
b) Näge - Why This word is used to ask for the reason or cause of something. For example:
- Näge meni çaňa çykdynyňyz? (Why did you kick me out?)
- Näge şu ýer gara bolýar? (Why does this place turn black?)
c) Näme - What This word is used to ask about the identity of an object or thing. For example:
- Näme bu kitap? (What is this book?)
- Näme edýärsiň? (What are you doing?)
d) När - When This word is used to ask about the time or date of an event. For example:
- När maşyn gelýär? (When does the car arrive?)
- När düşüp bilersiň? (When can you come?)
e) Nirede - Where This word is used to ask about the location of something. For example:
- Nirede ýaşapdyrsyň? (Where do you live?)
- Nirede olamazsyň? (Where can't you go?)
f) Näsyl - How This word is used to ask about the manner or method of doing something. For example:
- Näsyl edýärsiň? (How are you doing?)
- Näsyl ýazýar? (How do you write?)
g) Neçe - How many/how much This word is used to ask about the quantity or amount of something. For example:
- Neçe ýyl boldy? (How many years have passed?)
- Neçe pul berdim? (How much money did I give?)
