Slovak Vocabulary → Unit 7: Travel and Transportation → Directions

As a Slovak language teacher, I think it's important for my students to feel comfortable getting around in Slovakia. That's why we're going to focus on vocabulary related to asking for and giving directions in Slovak today.

Basic Vocabulary

Let's start with some basic vocabulary words that you'll need to know when asking for directions in Slovak:

Slovak Pronunciation English
Prosím vás... Pro-seem vash... Excuse me...
Kde je... Kde ye... Where is...
Vpravo Vpravo Right
Vľavo Vlyavo Left
Rovno Rovno Straight
Vpred Vpred Ahead
Tamto Tamto Over there

Here are some example sentences to help you understand how to use these words in context:

  • Prosím vás, kde je pamätník SNP? (Excuse me, where is the SNP monument?)
  • Otočte sa vpravo na rohu. (Turn right on the corner.)
  • Choďte rovno asi 500 metrov. (Go straight about 500 meters.)

Asking for Directions

When you need to ask for directions, it's important to be polite. Here are some phrases you can use to ask for help:

  • Prepáčte, môžete mi pomôcť? (Excuse me, can you help me?)
  • Prosím vás, kde je...? (Excuse me, where is...?)
  • Mohli by ste mi ukázať, ako sa dostanem na...? (Could you show me how to get to...?)

Make sure to thank the person who helps you! You can use these phrases to say thank you:

  • Ďakujem vám za pomoc. (Thank you for your help.)
  • Veľmi vám ďakujem. (Thank you very much.)

Giving Directions

When giving directions, it's important to be clear and use landmarks if possible. Here are some phrases you can use to give directions in Slovak:

  • Choďte vpravo. (Go right.)
  • Zabočte vľavo na druhom semafore. (Turn left at the second traffic light.)
  • Pamätník bude na vašej ľavej strane. (The monument will be on your left side.)

Additional Tips

- It's always a good idea to carry a map with you when you're traveling in Slovakia. - If you're lost or confused, don't be afraid to ask for help! Slovak people are generally friendly and willing to assist foreigners. - Make sure to use basic Slovak niceties like "dobrý deň" (good day) and "ďakujem" (thank you) when interacting with locals.

I hope this lesson has been helpful in preparing you for navigating Slovakia! Practice these phrases and don't be afraid to use them when you need to.
