Kazakh Grammar - How to Use "Have"

Hi Kazakh learners! 😊
In this lesson, you will learn how to use the verb "to have" in Kazakh grammar.

What is "Have" in Kazakh?

The verb "to have" in Kazakh is "ірімді болу" (irimdi bolu). However, in daily conversation, it is more common to use the verb "шығу" (shygu), which means "to come out" in English.

In Kazakh, "to have" is used to indicate possession or to express that something has happened or will happen.

Using "Have" to Express Possession

In Kazakh, to express possession, the possessor is followed by the verb "ірімді болу". For example:

Kazakh Pronunciation English
Менің кітабым ірімді болып тұр. Meniñ kitabym irimdi bolyp tur. I have a book. (Lit. My book is in possession.)
Сенде қалам ғана ірімді болады ма? Sende qalam ğana irimdi bolady ma? Do you only have a pen? (Lit. Is a pen in your possession only?)
Алдағы жұмыстарың ірімді болды. Aldağı jumystaryñ irimdi boldy. He had previous work experience. (Lit. His previous work experience was in possession.)

Note that "ірімді болу" can be used in all tenses.

Using "Have" to Describe Events or Actions

In Kazakh, "to have" is used to describe an event or action that has happened or will happen. For example:

Kazakh Pronunciation English
Бүгін сайрам болғаны үшін Мадина мектептен босатылды. Býgin saıram bolǵanı üşın Madına mektepten bosatyldy. Madina was given the day off from school because today is a holiday. (Lit. Today's being a holiday, Madina was given the day off from school.)
Азамат бүгін тест жазды. Azamat býgin test jazdy. Azamat took a test today. (Lit. Azamat wrote a test today.)

In these examples, "to have" is used to describe the event that happened or will happen.

Dialogue

Person 1: Менде телефон бар. (Mennde telefón bar.)
Person 2: Ой, керемет! Менде ол жоқ. (Oy, keremet! Mennde ol joq.)
(Person 1: I have a phone.
Person 2: Oh, great! I don't have it.)

Person 1: Ақшаңда Марияның анамдығы болды. (Aqshańda Mariyanyń anamdygı boldy.)
Person 2: Ал гөркеміздің анамдығы жоқ. (Al gørkemizdiń anamdygı joq.)
(Person 1: Maria's mother-in-law had a wedding today.
