Kazakh Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Kazakh learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in the Kazakh language. The conditional mood is used to express hypothetical situations or events that may or may not happen in the future. It is also used to express wishes and desires.

Don't miss the chance to check out these pages as you wrap up this lesson: Nouns, Consonants, Compound Prepositions and Postpositions & Possessive Adjectives.

Formation of the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is formed by adding the suffix -by/-bai to the verb stem. The suffix -by/-bai is added to the verb stem after the last vowel of the verb stem.

For example:

  • Verb stem: жатыр (to write)
  • Conditional form: жатырбай (I would write)

Conjugation[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is conjugated according to the person and number of the subject.

Person Singular Plural
1st -бай -мыз
2nd -сың -сыз
3rd -бе -дер

For example:

  • Verb stem: жатыр (to write)
  • 1st person singular: жатырбай (I would write)
  • 2nd person singular: жатырсың (you would write)
  • 3rd person singular: жатырбе (he/she/it would write)
  • 1st person plural: жатырмыз (we would write)
  • 2nd person plural: жатырсыз (you would write)
  • 3rd person plural: жатырдер (they would write)

Usage[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express hypothetical situations or events that may or may not happen in the future. It is also used to express wishes and desires.

For example:

  • Мен екенім болса, мен жатырбайды. (If I had time, I would write.)
  • Біз білім береміз, біз жатырмыз. (We would write if we had knowledge.)
  • Сіз білім берсеңіз, сіз жатырсыз. (You would write if you had knowledge.)
  • Ол білім берсе, ол жатырбе. (He/she/it would write if he/she/it had knowledge.)

The conditional mood can also be used to express wishes and desires.

For example:

  • Мен білім берсемін, мен жатырбайды. (I wish I had knowledge, I would write.)
  • Біз білім берсеміз, біз жатырмыз. (We wish we had knowledge, we would write.)
  • Сіз білім берсеңіз, сіз жатырсыз. (You wish you had knowledge, you would write.)
  • Ол білім берсе, ол жатырбе. (He/she/it wishes he/she/it had knowledge, he/she/it would write.)
