Vocabulary[edit | edit source]

Before we start discussing how to express your opinion in Bulgarian, let's learn some essential vocabulary that will help you to form sentences and ask questions about various topics. Here are some words and phrases to get you started:

Bulgarian Pronunciation English

ΠΏΡ€Π΅Π΄ΠΏΠΎΡ‡ΠΈΡ‚Π°ΠΌ predpochitam I prefer

най-лошо nai-losjo the worst

Π½Π΅Ρ‰ΠΎ neshto something
Π½ΠΈΡ‰ΠΎ nishto nothing
Ρ‚Ρ€ΡƒΠ΄Π½ΠΎ trudno difficult
лСсно lesno easy

These words and phrases are essential to know when expressing your opinion in Bulgarian. Now, let's look at some example sentences to put these words and phrases into context.

Grammar[edit | edit source]

To express your opinion in Bulgarian, you need to use the verb "смятам" (smiatam), which means "I think." You can also use "ΠΏΡ€Π΅Π΄ΠΏΠΎΡ‡ΠΈΡ‚Π°ΠΌ" (predpochitam), which means "I prefer," or "ΠΎΠ±ΠΈΡ‡Π°ΠΌ" (obicham), which means "I like."

To form a sentence, you need to follow this structure:

For example, if you want to say "I like this book," the sentence would be:

"Аз ΠΎΠ±ΠΈΡ‡Π°ΠΌ Ρ‚Π°Π·ΠΈ ΠΊΠ½ΠΈΠ³Π°." (Az obicham tazi kniga.)

Let's look at another example. If you want to say "I think the movie is good," the sentence would be:

"Аз смятам, Ρ‡Π΅ Ρ„ΠΈΠ»ΠΌΡŠΡ‚ Π΅ Π΄ΠΎΠ±ΡŠΡ€." (Az smiatam, che filmat e dobar.)

Notice how we use "Az" to mean "I." We also use the word "che" to introduce the opinion clause (that the movie is good).

To express your opinion about something specific, you need to use the following phrase: "Π—Π° ΠΌΠ΅Π½" (Za men). This phrase means "for me" and is used to express a personal preference. For example, if you want to say "For me, Bulgarian cuisine is the best," the sentence would be:

"Π—Π° ΠΌΠ΅Π½ Π±ΡŠΠ»Π³Π°Ρ€ΡΠΊΠ°Ρ‚Π° кухня Π΅ Π½Π°ΠΉ-Π΄ΠΎΠ±Ρ€Π°Ρ‚Π°." (Za men bulgarskata kuhnia e nai-dobrata.)

In Bulgarian, we use a comparative form to express a preference. To say something is the best or worst, you use the following words:

- Най-Π΄ΠΎΠ±Ρ€Π΅ (nai-dobre) - the best - Най-лошо (nai-losjo) - the worst

For example, if you want to say "This is the best coffee I've ever had," the sentence would be:

"Π’ΠΎΠ²Π° Π΅ Π½Π°ΠΉ-Π΄ΠΎΠ±Ρ€ΠΎΡ‚ΠΎ ΠΊΠ°Ρ„Π΅, ΠΊΠΎΠ΅Ρ‚ΠΎ съм ΠΏΠΈΠ»Π°/ΠΏΠΈΠ»." (Tova e nai-dobroto kafe, koeto sam pila/pil.)

Remember, in Bulgarian, the verb form agrees with the gender of the noun, so if you are a woman, you use "ΠΏΠΈΠ»Π°" (pila), and if you are a man, you use "ΠΏΠΈΠ»" (pil).

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

To help you understand how to express your opinion in Bulgarian, here's an example dialogue between two friends:

  • Maria: Какво мислиш Π·Π° Π½ΠΎΠ²Π°Ρ‚Π° ΠΊΠ½ΠΈΠ³Π° Π½Π° Π‘Ρ‚Π΅Ρ„Π°Π½ Π‘Π°Ρ‡Π΅Π²? (Kakvo mislish za novata kniga na Stefan Bachev?) - What do you think about Stefan Bachev's new book?
(Za men e dobra, no ne e tolkova dobra, kolkoto predishnata.) - For me, it's good, but it's not as good as the previous one.
- I find it difficult to make time for reading, so I don't know.
  • Ivan: Π Π°Π·Π±ΠΈΡ€Π°ΠΌ Ρ‚Π΅. (Razbiram te.) - I understand you.

In this dialogue, we see the use of "смятам" (I think) and "Π·Π° ΠΌΠ΅Π½" (for me). We also see the use of "Ρ‚Ρ€ΡƒΠ΄Π½ΠΎ" (difficult) to express a difficulty.

(Za men nai-dobroto parche torta e shokoladovo.) - For me, the best piece of cake is chocolate. - Π›ΠΈΡ‡Π½ΠΎ Π°Π· Π½Π΅ ΠΎΠ±ΠΈΡ‡Π°ΠΌ Π΄Π° Π³Π»Π΅Π΄Π°ΠΌ Ρ„ΠΈΠ»ΠΌΠΈ Π½Π° уТаситС.
