South Azerbaijani adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns. They can indicate size, shape, color, age, and other qualities. In this lesson, you will learn how to use adjectives correctly in sentences and make them agree with nouns.

Adjective Agreement

In South Azerbaijani, adjectives must agree with the noun they are modifying in terms of case, number, and gender.

Case Agreement

In South Azerbaijani, adjectives take different forms based on the case of the noun they modify. There are three cases in South Azerbaijani: nominative, genitive, and accusative.

Adjectives in the nominative case agree with the noun in the same case:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English
gözəl ev gözəl ev beautiful house

In the genitive case, adjectives agree with the noun in the same case:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English
gözəl evin gözəl evin beautiful house's

In the accusative case, adjectives agree with the noun in the same case:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English
gözəl evi gözəl evi beautiful house (direct object)

Number Agreement

In South Azerbaijani, adjectives must agree with the noun they modify in terms of number. If the noun is singular, the adjective must also be singular. If the noun is plural, the adjective must also be plural.

Singular:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English
gözəl ev gözəl ev beautiful house (singular)

Plural:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English
gözəl evlər gözəl evlər beautiful houses (plural)

Gender Agreement

In South Azerbaijani, adjectives must agree with the noun they modify in terms of gender. If the noun is masculine, the adjective must also be masculine. If the noun is feminine, the adjective must also be feminine.

Masculine:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English
böyük adam böyük adam big man

Feminine:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English
böyük qadın böyük qadın big woman

Keep in mind that gender agreement does not always match biological gender. Inanimate objects, for example, can have gender in some languages. In South Azerbaijani, most inanimate objects are considered masculine.

Summary

In this lesson, you learned how to use adjectives correctly in sentences and make them agree with nouns. You learned about case agreement, number agreement, and gender agreement. Remember that adjectives must agree with the noun they modify in all three of these areas. With practice, you will master adjective agreement and be able to use it confidently in your South Azerbaijani speech and writing.
