We also use it to describe nouns and pronouns. It is a fundamental verb, and you will encounter it frequently in your South Azerbaijani studies.

The present tense of "be" is used when describing a current state of being. It is used in the same way in South Azerbaijani as it is in English. The present tense has three forms: am, is, and are.

The past tense of "be" is used to describe a previous state of being. It is used in the same way in South Azerbaijani as it is in English. The past tense has two forms: was and were.

Let's have a look at the past tense of "be" in South Azerbaijani:

Here are a few examples of the past tense of "be":

  • Person 1: من گلبهارده بودوم. (Man gölbəhərədə budum.) (I was in Golbahar.)
  • Person 2: او قانونو بوخلاردن بودە. (O qanunu buxarladan budə.) (He/She/It was from Buxarla according to the law.)
  • Person 1: بیز بوردوردا بودیق. (Biz burdurdan budiq.) (We were in Bordor.)

The future tense of "be" is used to describe a state of being that will occur in the future. In English, we use the auxiliary verb "will" to form the future tense of "be." In South Azerbaijani, we use the suffix "-acaq" to create the future tense of "be."

Let's have a look at the future tense of "be" in South Azerbaijani:

  • Person 2: سیز پریجچه‌ده اولدوزونوز. (Siz Parisçədə olacaqsınız.) (You all will be in Paris.)
  • Person 1: بیز مرحله‌له اوچولاچاق‌ایق. (Biz mərhələlə həyata keçəcəyik.) (We will be passing through phases.)
  • Person 2: اونلار قوش‌تا بولار. (Onlar quşda olar.) (They will be in the birdhouse.)

Negation of "Be"[edit | edit source]

Negating "be" in South Azerbaijani is simple. To negate a "be" statement, we add the word "değil" after the conjugated form of "be."

Let's see an example in the present tense:

سن گؤزل شابلارده‌سن،دەغیل‌سان sen gözəl şəbələrdəsən, deyil-san You are not beautiful in the spiderwebs.

  • Person 1: بیز بوردا دغیل‌دیک. (Biz burda deyilik.) (We are not here.)
  • Person 2: اونلار اینگیلیزچه دغیل‌دیرلر. (Onlar İngilizcə deyillər.) (They are not speaking English.)
