Here are some common illnesses you may experience:

  • Förkylning - Cold
  • Hosta - Cough
  • Feber - Fever
  • Halsont - Sore throat
  • Magsjuka - Stomach flu

Here are some words and phrases that you can use to talk about your symptoms:

Swedish Pronunciation English
Huvudvärk Hoo-vud-vairk Headache
Illamående Ill-a-mawn-de Nausea
Ryggsmärta Rigg-smair-ta Backache
Trötthet Trott-tayt Fatigue
Yrsel Ur-sel Dizziness

Don't forget that Swedish nouns have genders!

Dialogue

Here is an example dialogue between a patient and a doctor:

Patient: Hej, jag känner mig inte så bra.
Doctor: Vad är det för symtom?
Patient: Jag har ont i huvudet och ont i magen.
Doctor: Ok, det låter som en förkylning och magbesvär. Du behöver ta det lugnt och dricka mycket vatten.

Translation:
Patient: Hi, I'm not feeling well.
Doctor: What are your symptoms?
Patient: I have a headache and stomach ache.
Doctor: Okay, it sounds like a cold and stomach trouble. You need to rest and drink lots of water.
Patient: Thank you, I will do that.

Useful phrases

Here are some useful phrases you might need when speaking to a doctor:

  • Jag har ont här - I have pain here
  • Min hals är inflammerad - My throat is inflamed
  • Jag mår illa - I feel nauseous
  • Jag hostar mycket - I cough a lot
  • Har du något recept? - Do you have a prescription?
