As a Thai language teacher with 20 years of experience, I am excited to teach you how to use adjectives to describe colors in Thai sentences. This lesson is part of the "Complete 0 to A1 Thai Course" for students who are complete beginners and will take them to the A1 level. Before we start, make sure to review the "Basic Sentence Structure" lesson, where you learned how to form basic sentences using subject and verb, and the "Adjectives" lesson, where you learned how to use basic adjectives in Thai sentences.

Basic Colors

Before we dive into how to describe colors, let's start by reviewing the names of the basic colors in Thai:

Thai Pronunciation English
สีแดง s̄īdæng red
สีเหลือง s̄īhêlụ̄xng yellow
สีน้ำเงิน s̄īnámngern blue
สีเขียว s̄īkhîeow green
สีดำ s̄īdam black
สีขาว s̄īkhăaw white
สีชมพู s̄īchmphûu pink
สีน้ำตาล s̄īńảtān brown
สีม่วง s̄īm̀wng purple

Describing Colors

To describe a color in more detail, we can use adjectives. In Thai, adjectives usually come after the noun they describe. Here are some adjectives that can be used to describe colors in Thai:

  • สดใส (sòd-sai) - bright and clear
  • อ่อนโยน (òn-yoon) - soft and gentle
  • สว่างไสว (sà-wâang-sai) - shiny and bright
  • มืด (méut) - dark
  • สีสัน (sǐi-san) - colorful
  • สั่นสะเทือน (sàn-sà-tʉ̌ʉn) - vibrant

Let's look at some examples:

  • สีแดงสดใส (sǐi-dǽng sòd-sai) - bright red
  • สีเขียวอ่อนโยน (sǐi-kiǎo òn-yoon) - soft green
  • สีน้ำเงินสว่างไสว (sǐi-náam-ngern sà-wâang-sai) - bright blue
  • สีดำมืด (sǐi-dam méut) - dark black
  • สีชมพูสั่นสะเทือน (sǐi-chom-phûu sàn-sà-tʉ̌ʉn) - vibrant pink

Remember that when using adjectives, they must agree with the noun they describe in gender and plurality. For example, สีเขียวอ่อนโยน (sǐi-kiǎo òn-yoon) is correct when describing a single masculine noun, but if you want to describe the same color on a feminine noun, you would use สีเขียวอ่อนโยนหนึ่ง (sǐi-kiǎo òn-yoon nèung).

Fruit and Vegetables

Colors are often used to describe fruit and vegetables. Here are some examples:

Thai Pronunciation English
ส้ม săwm orange
มะละกอ má-lá-gɔɔ papaya
มะขาม má-khǎam tamarind
มะเขือเทศ má-kêua-thêet tomato
โสภณ só-pà-n purple yam
ขึ้นฉ่าย kheûn-chàai scallion

Practice

Now it's time to practice describing colors in Thai sentences. Here are some prompts to help you get started:

  • Describe your favorite color
  • Describe the color of your phone or computer
  • Describe the color of the sky on a clear day
  • Describe the color of a banana or mango
