Thai Grammar → Present Tense Verbs → Regular Verbs

As a Thai language teacher with 20 years of experience, I am excited to teach you about regular verbs in the present tense. This lesson is part of the "Complete 0 to A1 Thai Course" and is designed for complete beginners who want to reach the A1 level.

Regular verbs are verbs that follow a predictable pattern when we change their form to match the tense we are using. In Thai, regular verbs in the present tense end in the vowel "o" or "ao."

Let's take the verb "to walk" (เดิน) as an example. To use this verb in the present tense, we simply add the appropriate personal pronoun before the verb and remove the final consonant.

Here's the conjugation of "เดิน" in the present tense:

Thai Pronunciation English
ฉันเดิน chan dooen I walk
เขาเดิน khao dooen he/she/they walk
เราเดิน rao dooen we walk
คุณเดิน khun dooen you walk (singular or plural)

As you can see, the verb form doesn't change. All we did was add the appropriate pronoun before the verb. Remember that in Thai, the verb always comes at the end of the sentence.

Now, let's practice with some exercises:

  1. Conjugate the verb "to eat" (กิน) in the present tense for each personal pronoun.
  2. Translate the following sentences to Thai: "I read a book", "They watch TV", "You play soccer", "We study Thai".

Here are the answers:

  1. {| class="wikitable"
  2. ! Thai !! Pronunciation !! English

|- | ฉันกิน || chan gin || I eat |- | เขากิน || khao gin || he/she/they eat |- | เรากิน || rao gin || we eat |- | คุณกิน || khun gin || you eat (singular or plural) |}

  1. "I read a book" = ฉันอ่านหนังสือ, "They watch TV" = เขาดูทีวี, "You play soccer" = คุณเล่นฟุตบอล, "We study Thai" = เราเรียนภาษาไทย

Remember that practice is key to mastering this conjugation pattern. Don't be afraid to practice with different verbs and personal pronouns until you feel confident with this grammar point.

Tips

  • Pay attention to the final consonant of the verb. This usually gets dropped in the present tense.
  • Start with one verb and practice conjugating it with all the personal pronouns. Once you are comfortable, move on to another verb.
  • Practice, practice, practice! Write out sentences and practice saying them out loud until you feel confident.
